The Story of Mountain City

Mountain City has an interesting past, with two big booms and busts.

Silver Rush and Early Days

The town started in 1870 because someone found a silver mine nearby. Over a thousand people moved to Mountain City, hoping to get rich. But when the silver ran out, most people left. The town became almost empty.

A post office was set up in Mountain City in 1870. The town got its name because it's surrounded by mountains and sits on high ground.

Copper Discovery and Second Boom

In 1879, copper was found in mines just northeast of Mountain City. People rushed back to the town, making it busy again. This was its second "boom." However, the copper eventually ran out too, and many people left once more.

Today, Mountain City is still very small. Some people even call it a ghost town because of its quiet history. As of 2023, no new buildings have been built there. The local town bar has been a central spot, helping to keep the community going for over 20 years.

What Time Is It in Mountain City?

Most of Nevada is officially in the Pacific Time Zone. But Mountain City, like some other towns near the Idaho border, unofficially uses the Mountain Time Zone. This is because it's closer to towns in southern Idaho, which are on Mountain Time. This makes it easier for people who travel between these areas.

Mountain City's Weather

Mountain City has a climate with four distinct seasons. It doesn't get a huge amount of rain or snow throughout the year.

Cold Nights and Winters

Because Mountain City is high up, the nights can be very cold. Even in summer, it's possible to have frost. Winters are especially cold at night.
