How Mrs. Schlorer's Began
In the early 1900s, a woman named Amelia Schlorer lived in Philadelphia. She loved to make salads with mayonnaise for church events and other community gatherings. People really enjoyed her mayonnaise!
In 1907, Amelia decided to try selling her mayonnaise. She filled twelve glass jelly jars and put simple labels on them, which she typed on a typewriter and held on with rubber bands. She offered them for sale, and guess what? All twelve jars sold in less than an hour! This was a big moment, as it was the first time mayonnaise was sold commercially in America.
Amelia quickly started making more mayonnaise in her family kitchen. Her two children helped her. They even used a special European machine to mix it. As more and more people wanted her mayonnaise, stores asked Amelia to make the packaging look more professional.
Amelia took a big chance. She went to a local glass factory. To buy jars there, she had to purchase at least 720 jars! Amelia had one main request: the jar opening had to be wide enough for a tablespoon to easily fit inside. For six years, Amelia and her family mixed, bottled, and labeled the mayonnaise by hand. They sold it to local grocery stores and even delivered it door-to-door.
In 1913, because of the huge demand, the Schlorer family officially started the Schlorer Delicatessen Company. Later, it became known as Mrs. Schlorer's, Inc.
About the Company
The Schlorer Delicatessen Company was created in 1913. This was because so many people wanted Mrs. Schlorer's Mayonnaise! A large factory with four floors and a basement was built in Philadelphia.
Edward Schlorer, Amelia's husband, owned and ran the company until he passed away in 1928. After his death, their son Charles Schlorer became the president. Their daughter, Anna Schlorer Smith, became the treasurer. The family continued to run the business.
In 1955, Mrs. Schlorer's, Inc. was sold to new owners, William H. and E. Donald Burns. They also owned another company called Atlantic Syrup Refining Corp. The production of Mrs. Schlorer's products then moved from Philadelphia to Vineland, New Jersey.
Later, in 1991, the rights to use the Mrs. Schlorer's brand name were bought by Connelly Containers, Inc. in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania. Then, in 1998, Good Food, Inc. in Honey Brook, Pennsylvania, bought the label rights. Today, some of Mrs. Schlorer's products are still made there!
Catchy Advertising
In 1942, Mrs. Schlorer's, Inc. created a special advertising jingle. A jingle is a short, catchy song used in commercials. This jingle was played on many radio and television commercials for decades, especially around Philadelphia. The song was written by Bertram May and Billy James. It helped people remember Mrs. Schlorer's Mayonnaise as a great choice for making a sandwich.
Here are the words to the popular song:
"I'm a sandwich man,
I'm a sandwich man,
I can make a sandwich better than anyone can.
It should smell fresh like a daisy
so I make it mayonnaisey
and the mayonnaise that I use is Mrs. Schlorer's.
I'm a sandwich man,
I'm a sandwich man,
I can make a sandwich better than anyone can.
I want to be a sandwich man for the rest of my days
as long as I can use Mrs. Schlorer's Mayonnaise."
