Munchos are a popular snack food that are like potato chips. They are made by Frito-Lay, a company owned by PepsiCo. Unlike regular potato chips, Munchos are made from dried potatoes.
Munchos are similar to other snacks like Lay's Stax and Pringles. These snacks are also made from dried potatoes. People often say Munchos have a "light and airy taste." They are also known for being quite salty. Munchos are also kosher, which means they follow certain food rules.
The Story of Munchos
Munchos first came out in 1969. When they were new, they were called "a potato snack." They were meant to be thicker than regular potato chips. Today, Munchos are actually thinner than most chips. They can even look a bit see-through and have small air pockets.
Their slightly curved shape makes them good for dipping. Munchos are made from dried potatoes, corn oil or sunflower oil, corn meal, and salt. They also contain some vitamins like niacin and thiamin.
When Munchos first appeared, a big bag cost about 59 cents. Today, that same size bag might cost around $2.29 to $3.29. A smaller bag costs about $1.49. Munchos came out a few months after Pringles. Both snacks were called "potato crisps" because of how they were made.
Fun Ads!
In 1969, Munchos had a fun advertising campaign. The commercials used the phrase, "It's MUNCHOS!" spoken in a high-pitched voice. These ads were created by Jim Henson, who is famous for making the Muppets.
The commercials featured a character named "Fred," played by Jim Henson. Fred would talk about the Munchos. There was also a monster character named "Arnold." Jim Henson first played Arnold, and later Frank Oz took over. Arnold loved Munchos very much!
You might recognize Arnold. His puppet later became the famous Cookie Monster on Sesame Street! Fred's puppet also became a character named Zelda Rose on The Muppet Show.
