A Look Back: Munfordville's History
How Munfordville Got Its Name
Long ago, this area was known as "Big Buffalo Crossing." The name "Munfordville" came from a man named Richard Jones Munford. He gave the land in 1816 to create the new main town for Hart County. Munfordville officially became a city in 1858.
The Civil War Battle
A big event happened here in 1862 during the American Civil War. A battle called the Battle of Munfordville took place right in the town.

Where is Munfordville?
Munfordville is located in the middle of Hart County. It sits on the north side of the Green River. You can reach Munfordville by U.S. Route 31W, which is its Main Street. Interstate 65 also passes nearby, with an exit at number 65. I-65 goes north about 32 miles to Elizabethtown and southwest about 40 miles to Bowling Green.

The Amish Community
An Amish community was started near Munfordville in 1989. Many of the Amish families who moved here came from the Geauga Amish settlement in Ohio. This community is one of the fastest-growing Amish settlements in America. In 2013, it had about 1,800 people living in 14 different church districts.

Munfordville has a lending library called the Hart County Public Library. It's a great place to find books and learn new things.
Famous People from Munfordville
Several notable people were born in Munfordville.
- Thomas John Wood was a major general in the U.S. Army.
- Simon B. Buckner Sr. was a lieutenant general for the Confederate side during the Civil War. Interestingly, he and Thomas John Wood knew each other as boys, but then fought on opposite sides in the war. Buckner Sr. later became the governor of Kentucky from 1887 to 1891. He also ran for vice president of the United States in 1896, but did not win.
- His son, Simon Bolivar Buckner, Jr., was also born in Munfordville. He served as a lieutenant general during World War II.
- Thelma Loyace Hawkins Stovall was an important female politician from the South. She won several statewide elections in Kentucky.
- The poet Davis McCombs grew up in Munfordville.
