Mustafa Şentop was born on August 6, 1968. He is a Turkish politician. He belongs to the Justice and Development Party, often called AKP.
He served as a Member of Parliament for several terms. From February 24, 2019, to June 2, 2023, he was the Speaker of the Grand National Assembly. This is like being the leader of the Turkish Parliament.
Early Life and Education
Mustafa Şentop was born in Tekirdağ, Turkey. He studied law at Istanbul University. Later, he earned a master's degree and a doctorate in public law. He completed these advanced degrees at Marmara University.
In 1993, he began working at Marmara University. He started as a research assistant in the Faculty of Law. He became a professor in 2011. Besides teaching at Marmara University, he also taught at other universities. He held various leadership roles at Marmara University. He also wrote and edited for different journals. He was even the chairman of a research center in Istanbul.
Political Career
Mustafa Şentop joined the Justice and Development Party (AKP). He was chosen for the party's main decision-making committee. From 2012 to 2015, he served as a Deputy Chairman of the AKP.
He was elected as a Member of Parliament for Istanbul. Later, he represented Tekirdağ in the parliament. He served in the 24th, 25th, 26th, and 27th terms of the parliament.
He also worked on the Committee on the Constitution. This committee helps create and change the country's main laws. He was the Chairman of this committee during the 26th term.
In 2018, he became the Deputy Speaker of the Grand National Assembly. Then, on February 24, 2019, he was elected as the 29th Speaker. He was re-elected for a second term on July 7, 2020. As Speaker, he led the meetings and work of the Turkish Parliament.
Mustafa Şentop has also expressed his views on international matters. For example, he called a peace agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates "disgraceful." He believed it was not helpful for the Palestinian cause.
Personal Life
Mustafa Şentop is married and has four children. He can speak both English and Arabic fluently.
International Recognition
- Turkmenistan: He received the Order "For great love for independent Turkmenistan" in 2022.
