Mysticons is an exciting animated TV show that aired from August 28, 2017, to September 15, 2018. It was made by three companies: Nelvana, Playmates Toys, and The Topps Company. The show was created by Sean Jara, who also helped write and produce it.

In August 2018, Sean Jara shared on Twitter that Mysticons would not be making any new episodes after its first 40. The very last episode, "Age of Dragons," aired on September 15, 2018, in the U.S. and September 23, 2018, in Canada.

Story of the Mysticons

The series takes place in a magical world called Gemina, mostly in its capital, Drake City. It follows the adventures of four teenage girls: Arkayna, Emerald, Zarya, and Piper. They are chosen by a powerful item called the Dragon Disk to become legendary heroes known as the Mysticons.

The Quest for the Codex

The girls begin a difficult journey to find four special spellbooks and animal-themed armbands. These items combine to form something called the Codex. Once they have it, they will gain their full powers. They need these powers to save their world from a villain named Dreadbane. Dreadbane wants to free Necrafa, who is the leader of the Spectral Hand and the Queen of the Undead.

When Necrafa is finally freed, she turns on Dreadbane. She throws him into the same place where she was banished a thousand years ago by Imani Firewing, who was the original Mysticon Dragon Mage.

New Challenges and Discoveries

As the new Mysticons continue their adventures, they meet many friends and enemies. Princess Arkayna finds out she has a twin sister named Proxima Starfall. There is also an old prophecy that talks about a terrible future. It says:

When the twin stars unite
The spectral beast will take flight
Its roars will heard a new dark age
And the realm will be
Purged by the dragon's rage

Later, Princess Arkayna and her twin sister get two special rings. These rings turn them into the "Twin Dragon." This power allows them to destroy the evil Spectral Dragon and the Queen of the Undead, leaving only half of her evil mask behind.

The Second Season's Battle

In the second and final season, the Mysticons are enjoying their peaceful lives. But they are soon called back to duty to destroy the remaining half of Queen Necrafa's evil mask. This mask is later worn by Proxima, who was once a friend. Proxima was led to believe she was Arkayna's long-lost twin sister, but it turned out Zarya was the true twin. Feeling betrayed by Arkayna, Proxima becomes their enemy.

Proxima takes over the Spectral Hand with the help of powerful mages called Astromancers, turning them into her mindless "Spectromancers." She also creates the Dark Codex by corrupting the Dragon Disk. To get revenge on the Mysticons, especially Arkayna, Proxima creates new villains called the Vexicons, who are even stronger than the Mysticons.

Facing the Mask's Power

Proxima realizes the mask is taking over her. She tries to throw it into a dangerous place called the Rift of Ruin. But the mask sticks to her face and completely controls her mind and body. It declares that it has been reborn to destroy all of Gemina!

The Mysticons, with help from Tazma, enter Proxima's mind to find a spell to free her from the mask's control. Princess Arkayna understands that she wasn't there for Proxima when she needed her most, and this is why Proxima is acting this way. Once Proxima is free, Princess Arkayna saves her from an ice attack by Mallory, one of the Vexicons. Mallory and the Vexicons leave, and Mallory puts on the remaining half of the evil mask.

The Final Battle for Gemina

At an island, the Vexicons get ready for the Spectral Hand to fully appear. Meanwhile, Proxima explains how the Spectral Hand, Queen Necrafa, and Dreadbane came to be. Proxima then undoes the dark spell she cast on the Astromancers, giving the Mysticons an advantage. Everyone escapes to Emerald's home.

Nova Terron mentions magical lances that can make the Mysticons' powers stronger, enough to destroy the Spectral Hand for good. The plans for these lances are in Queen Goodfey's necklace. Since Dreadbane refuses to lift the curse on the King and Queen, the Mysticons go to the palace to get the bone statues of the King and Queen themselves. They are caught by Mallory. Luckily, Dreadbane saves the petrified King and Queen from being destroyed. Dreadbane is badly hurt in a fight but uses his last strength to bring the Queen and King back to life.

Princess Arkayna is overjoyed to hug her mother. She then introduces Zarya Moonwolf, who calls the Queen "Mom." With the plans from the Queen, the Mysticons create their own mystical Lance of Justice. Queen Goodfey joins the Mysticons on their final mission to defeat the Vexicons and destroy the Spectral Hand.

The Spectral Hand suddenly changes and breaks free from an ancient pillar. Zarya realizes that the Dragons of Light might be able to defeat it. Back at Dragonhenge, the Mysticons and Queen Goodfey meet Stormy and King Valmuk. King Valmuk tells them that his dragons can only help if they grow to full size by going into the Ever Realm, where time moves faster.

At the Valley of Shooting Stars, they are caught by the Vexicons. Eartha, one of the Vexicons, feels conflicted about crushing the dragon eggs and changes her mind. She humiliates Mallory, giving the dragon eggs time to grow. With their dragon mounts, the Mysticons use their powers to destroy the Spectral Hand completely and free everyone it had trapped.

Peace in Gemina

With Planet Gemina finally at peace, life returns to normal in Drake City and the rest of the realm. Emerald has Eartha living with her. King Darius and Queen Goodfey go back to their royal duties and have the Vexicons imprisoned. Nova Terron steps down as the top Astromancer and gives the honor to Proxima Starfall. He also gives her the powerless Codex and the pure gold Dragon Disk. Riding their dragon mounts, the Mysticon "sisters" continue their duties to bring peace, love, and justice to the realm.

How the Show Was Made

In June 2015, it was announced that Nelvana, a Canadian company, was working with Nickelodeon in the U.S. to create Mysticons. Nickelodeon would broadcast the show, and Nelvana would start making it later that year. Both companies also worked with The Topps Company. By June 2016, the show was set to have 40 episodes. Sean Jara was the creator, writer, and main story editor. The show was promoted as an "action series" before it came out.

Show Themes

Mysticons focuses on female heroes, which was different from many shows for younger viewers that focused on boys. It explores themes of magic, superpowers, and the classic battle between good vs. evil. The series features elves, like Piper Willowbrook, and princesses, like Princess Arkayna Goodfey and Zarya Moonwolf, who were separated at birth. The show also includes the undead, such as the villain Queen Necrafa, who is a type of undead creature called a lich. Her power comes from the Spectral Hand, an evil force started by a witch. Reviewers have said the show promotes "strong, confident, smart and funny girls."

Voice Actors and Awards

From 2014 to 2017, Stevie Vallance was the voice director for the series in Toronto. The main voice cast included Alyson Court as Princess Arkayna Goodfey, Evany Rosen as Emerald Goldenbraid, Nicki Burke as Zarya Moonwolf, and Ana Sani as Piper Willowbrook.

In March 2018, Mysticons was nominated for several awards at the 6th Canadian Screen Awards. Matt Ferguson was nominated for directing the episode "Scourge of the Seven Skies," and Sean Jara won an award for writing the episode "Sisters in Arms." The next year, another episode written by Jara, "The Princess and the Pirate," was nominated at the 7th Canadian Screen Awards. Ana Sani was also nominated for an ACTRA Award for her voice acting in "The Edge of Two Morrows."

Music in the Show

In March 2018, the show was nominated for three awards at the 6th Canadian Screen Awards, including one for Christian Szczesniak's music in the episode "The Coronation." In November 2018, singer Dulce Lopez sang the Spanish version of the Mysticons theme song. In January 2020, the Canadian pop group Girl Pow-R was chosen to re-record and sing the show's theme song.

Promotion and Release

Mysticons was first planned for boys but changed its focus to girls aged 6 to 11 during its creation. Andrew Kerr from Nelvana explained in 2016 that the creators agreed the show would be better with "female protagonists" (main characters).

On June 16, 2018, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment and Elevation Pictures released the first DVD in Canada. It contained episodes 1–6 and was called "New Heroes Rise." In August of that year, Lisa Godfrey of Corus Entertainment used Mysticons as an example of how they make money from a U.S. broadcast deal with Nickelodeon, selling merchandise, and working with companies like Burger King.

Where to Watch the Show

In mid-August 2017, Nickelodeon showed a trailer and videos about the characters for Mysticons. The show then premiered on Nickelodeon in the U.S. with a special five-day event starting August 28, 2017. After that, it moved to its regular Sunday morning time slot. Mysticons also began airing on Nicktoons on August 30. New episodes for the second season started airing on Nicktoons on January 13, 2018. Reruns also aired on the Nick Jr. Channel and TeenNick.

In Canada, the series premiered on YTV with a similar five-day event starting August 28, 2017. It then moved to its Sunday time slot on September 3, 2017. Repeats also began airing on Nickelodeon and Teletoon on September 9. In French-speaking Canada, a five-day preview aired on Télétoon from September 4 to 8, before moving to its regular slot on September 9.

Books, Games, and Toys

Before the show debuted, Nelvana launched a YouTube channel for Mysticons on July 19, 2017. This online content was made by Blue Ant Media.

Since the show aired, several graphic novels (comic books) have been released. These books tell new adventures that didn't happen in the TV series. Volume 1 was released in 2017, followed by Volume 2 in May 2019, and Volume 3 in late 2019.

In October 2017, Nelvana launched a browser game called "Piper Parkour" and a free-to-play mobile game called Mysticons: Secrets of Gemina for iOS and Android devices. Later, more browser games were released: "Arkayna Attack" in December 2017, "Em's Mayhem" in February 2018, and "Cover of Night" in March 2018. All these games were developed by Relish Interactive.

In late 2017, Playmates Toys released a Mysticons toy line. The Topps Company also published a trading card game. A Burger King kids meal promotion ran in the United States and Canada in February and March 2018.

Macmillan Publishers started a Mysticons novel series on June 19, 2018. The first two books were Quest for the Codex (which was based on the show) and The Secret of the Fifth Mysticon (an original story). The second set, Prophecy of Evil (a novelization) and The Stolen Magic (an original story), came out on August 28, 2018. A third original novel, The Diamond Curse, was released on January 8, 2019. Macmillan also released audiobooks of their original stories, read by the show's voice actors.

On August 15, 2018, Dark Horse Comics launched a series of graphic novels by Kate Leth and Megan Levens. A miniseries of four chapter books, each focusing on one of the Mysticons, was also released. Three of these books were released: The Secret of the Fifth Mysticon (about Emerald), The Stolen Magic (about Zarya), and The Diamond Curse (about Princess Arkayna).
