NOMA is a huge building project in Manchester, England. It's costing around £800 million and covers about 20 acres. This project is one of the biggest developments in the whole United Kingdom, especially outside of South East England. NOMA is designed to bring new life to the northern part of Manchester city centre. This area hasn't seen as much new building as other parts of the city.
The Co-operative Group, a company that has been in Manchester since 1843, is behind this project. They hope NOMA will encourage more businesses to invest in Manchester. The development includes creating lots of new spaces for offices, homes, shops, fun activities, and hotels.
A very important part of NOMA is the One Angel Square building. It cost £100 million and looks like a "sliced egg" because of its unique shape. It's about 72 metres tall and opened in 2013. Other plans include turning the Hanover Building into office spaces and changing City Buildings into a hotel. Future plans also feature a tall residential tower called Angel Gardens and another office building, 3 Angel Square.

What is NOMA?
How NOMA Got Its Name
In March 2011, the project was named NOMA. This name comes from combining "No" for "North" (because of its global location at 53° North) and "Ma" for "Manchester." The idea for the name came from SOMA (South of Market) in San Francisco, which is another area that has been redeveloped.
Where is NOMA Located?
NOMA is right in the centre of Manchester City Centre. It covers a 20-acre site. The project helps to make sure The Co-operative Group stays a big part of the city.
Buildings and Spaces in NOMA
One Angel Square
One Angel Square was the very first part of the NOMA project to be built. It's the new main office for Co-operative Group employees. Building work started in July 2010 and involved 4,000 workers! This building is known for being very eco-friendly. It was even called 'the most sustainable building in the world' when Queen Elizabeth II officially opened it in November 2013.
Hanover Building
Hanover Building is a historic building on Corporation Street. It was built between 1905 and 1909 and is a Grade II listed building, which means it's protected because of its special history and architecture. NOMA plans to update it to create modern office and shop spaces. Its stone and brick outside will be cleaned up to show off its beautiful old details.
Sadler's Yard: A New Public Square
In January 2014, construction started on a new public square and event space. An old building from the 1960s, called Redfern Annexe, was taken down to make room for this new city centre square. It was named Sadler's Yard. This is a great place for people to meet and for events to happen.
City Buildings and Hotel Indigo
A new hotel called Hotel Indigo will be built near Corporation Street. It will be 14 storeys tall and have a round shape. This new hotel will also include the nearby City Buildings, which are also Grade II listed.
New Century House
New Century House is another Grade II listed building in the NOMA area. After Co-operative Group employees moved to One Angel Square in 2013, parts of New Century House became available for smaller businesses to rent. This building will be updated but will stay as office space.
New Century Hall, which is attached to New Century House, is a famous conference hall. It used to be a music venue where big stars like Jimi Hendrix and Tina Turner performed in the 1960s and 1970s! New Century Hall has reopened for public use and was renovated in 2014.
Federation House
Federation House is the only former Co-operative building in the area that isn't listed as historic. It was used for a while by an art gallery, but now it's being updated to be a space especially for new and digital businesses.
Three Angel Square
In March 2014, plans were announced for a new building called Three Angel Square. It will have nine floors and offer lots of flexible office space for small to medium-sized companies. It's expected to be ready by 2018.
