Napoleon A. Jones Jr. (born August 25, 1940 – died December 12, 2009) was an important judge in the United States. He served as a federal judge for the Southern District of California. This means he worked in a special court that handles big cases for the U.S. government.

Early Life and Education
Napoleon Jones Jr. was born in Hodge, Louisiana in 1940. He finished San Diego High School in 1958. He then went to San Diego State University. There, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1962. He also got a Master of Social Work degree in 1967.
Later, he studied law at the University of San Diego School of Law. He earned his law degree, called a Juris Doctor, in 1971. Before becoming a lawyer, he served in the United States Army from 1962 to 1965.
Early Legal Work
After law school, Jones worked for California Rural Legal Assistance. This group helps people in rural areas with legal problems. He worked in Modesto, California, from 1971 to 1973. He started as a legal intern, then became a staff attorney.
From 1973 to 1975, he was a staff attorney for Defenders, Inc. in San Diego, California. This organization provides legal help to people who cannot afford it. After that, he worked as a private lawyer in San Diego from 1975 to 1977.
Becoming a Judge
Serving in California Courts
Napoleon Jones Jr. began his career as a judge in California state courts. From 1977 to 1982, he was a judge on the San Diego Municipal Court. This court handles smaller legal cases.
Then, he became a judge on the San Diego Superior Court. He served there from 1982 to 1994. This court handles more serious cases, like major crimes and civil disputes.
Becoming a Federal Judge
In 1994, President Bill Clinton chose Napoleon Jones Jr. to be a federal judge. He was nominated for a seat on the United States District Court for the Southern District of California. The United States Senate approved his nomination on September 14, 1994. He officially started his new role on September 15, 1994.
He served as a federal judge until September 19, 2007. At that time, he took on a new role called "senior status". This means a judge can reduce their workload but still hear cases. He continued to serve in this role until he passed away on December 12, 2009.
