Nashville-Davidson (balance) is a special name used by the U.S. Census Bureau. It describes the part of Davidson County, Tennessee, United States that does not include its smaller, independent cities.

Nashville and Davidson County share a special kind of government called a consolidated metropolitan government. This means that even though some smaller cities are inside Davidson County, they are still considered part of the larger Nashville area. These cities have their own local governments and are not part of the "balance" area.

The cities that are part of Davidson County but are not included in the "balance" area are:

One city, Lakewood, used to be separate. But after a vote on March 15, 2011, its city government was ended. Its residents then became part of the Nashville-Davidson "balance" population.

The "balance" area includes the original City of Nashville before 1963. It also includes many areas that were not part of any city before Nashville and Davidson County joined together.

In 2017, about 667,560 people lived in the "balance" area. Back in 2000, the population was 545,524.

The Nashville-Davidson "balance" area is located around the center point of 36°9′17″N 86°45′43″W / 36.15472°N 86.76194°W / 36.15472; -86.76194.

The United States Census Bureau says the total area of the "balance" is about 1,287.2 km2 (497.0 sq mi). Most of this area, about 1,225.9 km2 (473.3 sq mi), is land. The rest, about 61.4 km2 (23.7 sq mi) (which is about 4.77%), is water.

Who Lives in Nashville-Davidson (Balance)?

Let's look at the people living in the "balance" area, based on the census from 2000. There were 545,524 people living there. These people lived in 227,403 homes, and 131,211 of those were families.

The area had about 445.0 people/km2 (1,153 people/sq mi) living in each square kilometer. There were also 242,451 housing units. This means there were about 197.8 units/km2 (512 units/sq mi) housing units per square kilometer.

Most people in the "balance" area were White (about 65.91%). About 26.81% were Black or African American. Smaller groups included Asian (2.38%), Native American (0.30%), and Pacific Islander (0.07%). About 2.51% were from other backgrounds, and 2.02% were from two or more backgrounds. People of Hispanic or Latino background made up 4.72% of the population.

Out of all the homes, about 26.5% had children under 18 living there. About 39.1% were married couples living together. About 14.6% had a female head of the house with no husband present. And 42.3% were not families.

About 33.8% of all homes had just one person living in them. About 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older. On average, there were 2.29 people in each home and 2.96 people in each family.

The ages of people living in the "balance" area varied. About 22.1% were under 18 years old. About 11.9% were between 18 and 24. The largest group, 34.3%, was between 25 and 44. About 20.8% were between 45 and 64, and 11.0% were 65 or older. The average age was 34 years old.

For every 100 females, there were about 93.8 males. For every 100 females aged 18 and over, there were about 90.8 males.

In 2000, the average income for a home in the "balance" area was $39,232. For families, the average income was $48,448. Males earned an average of $33,114, while females earned an average of $27,659. The average income per person was $22,018.

About 10.2% of families and 13.3% of all people lived below the poverty line. This included about 19.5% of those under 18 and 10.8% of those aged 65 or older.
