Necklace facts for kids

A necklace is a beautiful piece of jewellery that people wear around their neck. People have worn necklaces for a very long time, since ancient times! Almost every civilisation throughout history has used them.
Necklaces are often made from precious metals like gold or silver. They can also have sparkling jewels, or even colourful beads. They are worn for decoration, to show wealth, or for special ceremonies.
The Indore Necklace
The Indore necklace is a very famous and beautiful piece of jewellery. It has amazing emeralds and diamonds. The emeralds used in this necklace came from mines in Colombia. The diamonds were found in India.
Experts believe that the gemstones for the necklace were cut in India during the 17th century. However, nobody knows the full story of the necklace's early history. Its first known owner was Tukoji Rao III. He was a Maharaja of Indore, which was a Princely State in India. This means he was a powerful ruler of a region that was part of India but had its own local government.
Tukoji Rao III owned the necklace in the early 1900s. When he decided to step down from his role (this is called an abdication), the necklace was given to his son. His son, Yashvantrao II, then became the new ruler. Sometimes, this necklace is wrongly called the "Spanish Inquisition necklace." There is no real reason for this name.
