Negro Hollow, sometimes called Negro Hollow Run, is a small stream in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. It's the only named stream that flows into Messers Run. This stream is about 1.7 miles (2.7 kilometers) long. It flows through three different areas: Delano, Kline, and East Union Townships. The land area that drains into Negro Hollow is about 1.57 square miles (4.07 square kilometers). This stream is special because it's a great place for coldwater fish, especially brook trout.

Where Negro Hollow Flows

Negro Hollow starts on a mountain called Bears Head in Delano Township. It flows northwest for a short distance, entering a valley. The stream then gets water from an unnamed smaller stream. After that, it turns north for a bit, flowing through another valley.

The stream then enters Kline Township. It flows north-northeast for several tenths of a mile. Next, it enters East Union Township. Finally, Negro Hollow turns east-northeast and meets Messers Run. This meeting point is close to the Blue Head Reservoir.

Negro Hollow joins Messers Run about 0.80 miles (1.29 kilometers) before Messers Run ends.

Smaller Streams Joining Negro Hollow

Negro Hollow doesn't have any other named streams flowing into it. However, it does have one unnamed stream. This smaller stream is known as "Trib 27607 To Negro Hollow." It flows through Mahanoy Township and Delano Township.

Water Quality of Negro Hollow

The water in Negro Hollow is naturally a bit acidic. This means it could be affected by acid rain.

The pH level of Negro Hollow's water is 6.6. This number tells us how acidic or basic the water is. The stream also has a small amount of alkalinity, which helps balance the acid. The water is considered soft, not hard.

In 1997, scientists measured the water temperature of Negro Hollow. It was about 14.2 degrees Celsius (57.6 degrees Fahrenheit). The air temperature nearby was 23 degrees Celsius (73 degrees Fahrenheit).

Land and Rocks Around the Stream

The land around Negro Hollow is interesting. Near where the stream ends, the ground is made of a type of rock called the Mauch Chunk Formation. This rock includes siltstone, sandstone, and shale.

Higher up the stream, you can also find the Mauch Chunk Formation. But another type of rock, the Pottsville Formation, is also there. This rock has claystone, limestone, and more sandstone.

The soil near the lower part of Negro Hollow is called Leck Kill soil. The rest of the area around the stream has Hazleton soil.

Negro Hollow is a small stream, about 2.8 meters (9.2 feet) wide. It flows downhill quite steeply.

Some areas along Negro Hollow can flood during very heavy rains. This is especially true for the unnamed stream that flows into Negro Hollow.

Most of the land around Negro Hollow is covered by forests. There are also some roads in the area, but they are often closed. In 1990, about 31 people lived in each square kilometer of the stream's watershed. A mountain called Locust Mountain is also found in this area.

Watershed and History of the Stream

The watershed of Negro Hollow covers about 1.57 square miles (4.07 square kilometers). A watershed is all the land where water drains into a specific stream. This watershed is located in four different townships. Most of it is in Delano Township, but parts are also in East Union Township, Mahanoy Township, and Kline Township. All the water from this area eventually flows into the Susquehanna River and then into the Chesapeake Bay.

A special natural area called a Nature Conservancy Priority Forest Hub is in the eastern part of the watershed. Also, the lower part of the watershed is within Pennsylvania State Game Lands Number 308. This means much of the area is protected and forested.

Negro Hollow was once used to supply water to Mahanoy City in the early 1900s. The Mahanoy City Water Company managed this water supply.

Animals and Nature in Negro Hollow

Negro Hollow is a very important place for wildlife. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection considers it a High-Quality Coldwater Fishery. This means the water is clean and cold enough for fish that need these conditions. The unnamed stream that flows into Negro Hollow is also considered a High-Quality Coldwater Fishery.

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission also calls Negro Hollow "Class A Wild Trout Waters." This is because it's a great place for wild brook trout to live and grow.

Two main types of fish live in Negro Hollow: brook trout and sculpins. There are many brook trout here, both young and old. In 1997, a report said that Negro Hollow was a good spot for angling, which means fishing.

Many different bird species also live near Negro Hollow. These include American robins, hermit thrushes, Cooper's hawks, winter wrens, and pileated woodpeckers. American robins are especially common in this area.
