A Look Back: Nelson's History
Nelson was first known as Dent. It was named after an early settler, Richard Dent. The city was founded around 1875.
The name was later changed to Nelson. This new name honored Knute Nelson. He was an important person from Minnesota. Knute Nelson also served as a United States Senator.
A post office opened in 1880 under the name Dent. In 1881, the post office name also changed to Nelson.
Nelson's Geography
Nelson is a small city that covers about 0.66 square miles (1.71 square kilometers). All of this area is land. There are no large bodies of water within the city limits.
Minnesota State Highway 27 is the main road that goes through Nelson. It helps people travel in and out of the community.

Population in 2010
A census is an official count of the population. The 2010 census showed that 187 people lived in Nelson. These people lived in 84 different homes, called households. About 45 of these households were families.
The city had about 283 people per square mile. There were 92 housing units available. Most of the people living in Nelson were White (98.9%). A small number (1.1%) were Native American. About 0.5% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.
