The Nemadji River is a river that starts in Pine County, Minnesota, in the United States. It flows through Carlton County, Minnesota and Douglas County, Wisconsin. Finally, it empties into Lake Superior.

The river is about 70.8 miles (114.0 km) long. It begins at Maheu Lake in Pine County. It also gets water from the South Fork Nemadji River. The Nemadji River ends in Allouez Bay, which is part of Lake Superior. This area is near the city of Superior and Wisconsin Point.

Where Does the Nemadji River Flow?

Most of the Nemadji River's path is in Douglas County, Wisconsin. It enters the county near Foxboro. The river then flows through different towns. It eventually exits in East End, Superior, near Loons Foot Boat Landing.

What Does "Nemadji" Mean?

The name "Nemadji" comes from the Ojibwe language. The full Ojibwe word is Nemanjitigweyaag. This means "left-hand river."

This name makes sense when you look at it from Allouez Bay. From there, the Nemadji River is on the left. The Saint Louis River is on the right.

Protecting the Nemadji River

In 1992, a train accident happened south of Superior. It caused a spill of a chemical called aromatic hydrocarbons into the Nemadji River. This incident affected fish and other wildlife in the river.

To help the river recover, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service worked to restore the area. They used money from a settlement with the train company. This money helped fix parts of the Lake Superior basin that were harmed. The river flows through several areas, including the City of Superior and parts of Douglas, Carlton, and Pine counties.
