The Nemenjiche River is a river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the Obatogamau Lakes. This river is found in the Eeyou Istchee Baie-James area, which is part of the Nord-du-Québec region. The river's path goes through several areas called townships, including Robert, Rohault, Gamache, and Dauversière.

You can reach the eastern side of the Nemenjiche River's area by using a forest road. This road runs north-south and connects to Quebec route 113, which goes between Lebel-sur-Quévillon and Chibougamau. The western side of the river is served by the R1032 road, which heads north from Lake Fancamp.

Usually, the Nemenjiche River freezes over from early November until mid-May. However, it's generally safe to travel on the ice from mid-November to mid-April.

River's Location and Surroundings

The Nemenjiche River is surrounded by other important water bodies. Knowing these helps us understand where the river fits in the larger water system.

Where the River Starts

The Nemenjiche River begins at the end of Nemenjiche Lake. This lake is about 6 kilometers long and sits at an elevation of 394 meters. It stretches across the Robert and Rohault townships. Nemenjiche Lake is very close to the border between the Regional County Municipality of Le Domaine-du-Roy and Eeyou Istchee Baie-James. This border is also a watershed, meaning it separates water flowing towards James Bay from water flowing towards Lac Saint-Jean.

Nemenjiche Lake is long and narrow, running from north to south, and it has about forty islands. It gets its water from a few small, unnamed lakes to the north and five unnamed lakes to the west.

The mouth of Lake Nemenjiche, where the river starts, is located:

  • 4.9 km west of Rohault Lake.
  • 11.2 km south of Nemenjiche Bay, which is part of Obatogamau Lakes.
  • About 21 km southwest of the Canadian National Railway and Quebec route 167. These two travel routes run side-by-side and connect Saint-Félicien, Quebec to Chibougamau.
  • 47.4 km southeast of the town of Chapais, Quebec.
  • 54.3 km southeast of downtown Chibougamau.

The River's Journey

From its starting point at Lake Nemenjiche, the Nemenjiche River flows for 17.4 kilometers. Here's how its journey unfolds:

  • It flows 1.3 km west, reaching the edge of Gamache Township. It passes north of a mountain that is 474 meters high.
  • Then, it travels 8.3 km north through marshy areas, crossing the border between Gamache and Rohault townships.
  • Next, it goes 1.9 km northeast, reaching the southern edge of La Dauversière township.
  • Finally, it flows 5.9 km north until it reaches its mouth.

The Nemenjiche River empties into a narrow bay called Nemenjiche Bay, on the southern shore of Obatogamau Lakes. From this point, the water flows northwest through the Obatogamau Lakes to the mouth of Eau Jaune Lake (which means "Yellow Water Lake"). After that, the current moves southwest along the Obatogamau River, and then southwest again along the Chibougamau River to the eastern shore of Goéland Lake (Waswanipi River). The Waswanipi River flows northwest through Goéland Lake and is a branch of Lake Matagami.

The mouth of the Nemenjiche River is located:

  • 27.4 km southeast of the mouth of Eau Jaune Lake (Yellow Water Lake) in Obatogamau Lakes.
  • 11.6 km northeast of where the Chibougamau River meets the Opawica River.
  • 40.8 km southeast of the town center of Chapais, Quebec.
  • 42.8 km south of downtown Chibougamau.

Naming the River

The name "Rivière Nemenjiche" was officially recognized on December 5, 1968. This happened when the Commission de toponymie du Québec was first created. This commission is responsible for naming places in Quebec.
