Rohault Lake is a freshwater lake located in Quebec, Canada. It's found in the western part of a region called Le Domaine-du-Roy. This area is part of the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean administrative region. The lake stretches across different areas known as townships.

The main activity around Rohault Lake is forestry, which means managing forests and cutting trees for wood. Tourism, like visiting for fun and outdoor activities, is also important.

You can reach the western side of the lake by a forest road. Another main road, Quebec route 167, passes northeast of Nicabau Lake. This road connects the towns of Chibougamau and Saint-Félicien, Québec. A train track, part of the Canadian National Railway, also runs along this road.

The lake usually freezes over in early November. It stays frozen until mid-May. However, it's generally safe to walk or travel on the ice from mid-November to mid-April.

Geography

Rohault Lake is one of the most important lakes in the upper part of the Normandin River system. The Normandin River eventually flows into the Ashuapmushuan River, which then empties into Lac Saint-Jean. Rohault Lake is at the western edge of the Le Domaine-du-Roy area.

Size and Features

Rohault Lake is about 16.3 kilometres (10.1 mi) long. At its widest point, it measures about 5.6 kilometres (3.5 mi). The lake sits at an elevation of 402 metres (1,319 ft) above sea level. The shape of the lake's shoreline is quite complex, with many curves and inlets.

A long piece of land, like a finger, sticks out from the north shore of Rohault Lake. This peninsula stretches for about 8.3 kilometres (5.2 mi) into the middle of the lake. The lake also has around one hundred islands. The biggest island is on the north side, stretching about 5.9 kilometres (3.7 mi) along the west shore.

A narrow strip of land, about 11.3 kilometres (7.0 mi) long, separates Rohault Lake from Bouteroue Lake to its east. On the east side of Rohault Lake, there's a large inlet called Gaudreau Bay, which extends north for 11.6 kilometres (7.2 mi). The water from Rohault Lake flows through this bay to reach the lake's exit point, which is at the end of another bay on the east side.

Lake Outflow and Nearby Waters

The water from Rohault Lake flows out into Bouteroue Lake. From there, the water continues its journey.

The mouth, or exit point, of Rohault Lake is located:

  • About 8.5 kilometres (5.3 mi) northwest of where Bouteroue Lake empties.
  • About 10.2 kilometres (6.3 mi) northwest of where Bouteroue Creek joins the Normandin River.
  • About 19.7 kilometres (12.2 mi) northwest of the mouth of Poutrincourt Lake.
  • About 38.1 kilometres (23.7 mi) northwest of the mouth of Ashuapmushuan Lake.
  • About 160.6 kilometres (99.8 mi) southwest of where the Ashuapmushuan River flows into Lac Saint-Jean.

Many other lakes and rivers are close to Rohault Lake. These include:

From the bridge at the exit of Rohault Lake, the water flows:

  • South for about 10.4 kilometres (6.5 mi) through Bouteroue Lake to its own exit.
  • Then, it flows southeast and northeast through an unnamed lake to a dam.
  • Finally, it goes down Bouteroue Creek for about 7.0 kilometres (4.3 mi) to a bay in Nicabau Lake. The Normandin River flows through the southern part of Nicabau Lake. The Normandin River then flows southeast to Ashuapmushuan Lake, which is the starting point for the Ashuapmushuan River.

Name Origin

The name "Lac Rohault" was officially recognized on December 5, 1968. This was done by the Commission de toponymie du Quebec, which is the organization responsible for naming places in Quebec.
