The Neotropical Pygmy Squirrel (Sciurillus pusillus) is a super tiny squirrel that lives in South America. It is the only living animal in its group, called Sciurillus, and its family branch, called Sciurillinae. This little squirrel is known for being one of the smallest squirrels in the world.

What is a Pygmy Squirrel?

A pygmy squirrel is a type of squirrel that is much smaller than most other squirrels. The Neotropical Pygmy Squirrel is a great example. It is so small that it can fit in the palm of your hand! These tiny creatures are often hard to spot because of their size.

Size and Appearance

This squirrel is truly miniature. It usually grows to be only about 10 to 12 centimeters (4 to 5 inches) long. This measurement does not even include its tail! Its tail adds another 10 to 13 centimeters (4 to 5 inches) to its total length. It has soft, reddish-brown fur on its back. Its belly is a lighter, creamy white color. Its small ears are often tipped with a bit of white fur.

Where Do They Live?

The Neotropical Pygmy Squirrel lives in parts of South America. You can find it in countries like Brazil, French Guiana, Guyana, and Suriname. These squirrels prefer to live in tropical rainforests. They like areas with lots of tall trees and dense plant life.

Their Forest Home

Rainforests are perfect homes for these tiny squirrels. The trees provide them with food, shelter, and places to hide from predators. They spend most of their lives high up in the trees. They are very agile and can move quickly through the branches.

What Do They Eat?

Like most squirrels, the Neotropical Pygmy Squirrel is an omnivore. This means it eats both plants and small animals. Its diet mainly includes tree sap, fruits, and small insects.

Finding Food

These squirrels often make small holes in tree bark to drink the sap. This sweet liquid is an important part of their diet. They also search for ripe fruits and berries. Sometimes, they might catch tiny insects or larvae to eat. They are very careful and quick when they are looking for food.

Daily Life and Behavior

Neotropical Pygmy Squirrels are active during the day. This means they are diurnal. They spend their days climbing trees and searching for food. They are usually solitary animals, meaning they prefer to live alone.

Staying Safe

Because they are so small, these squirrels have many predators. Birds of prey, snakes, and larger mammals might try to hunt them. They use their speed and ability to hide in dense foliage to stay safe. Their small size also helps them squeeze into tiny spaces.

Reproduction and Life Cycle

Not much is known about the exact reproduction of the Neotropical Pygmy Squirrel. However, like other squirrels, they likely build nests in tree hollows or dense branches.

Baby Squirrels

Female squirrels usually give birth to a small number of babies, called pups or kits. The babies are born blind and helpless. Their mother takes care of them until they are old enough to find food on their own. They grow quickly and soon learn to climb and forage like their parents.

Conservation Status

The Neotropical Pygmy Squirrel is currently listed as "Data Deficient" (DD) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This means there isn't enough information to know if their population is growing or shrinking.

Why "Data Deficient"?

It's hard to study these squirrels because they are so small and live in dense rainforests. Scientists need more research to understand how many of them exist and what threats they face. Protecting their rainforest homes is important for their survival.
