Neshanic is a small community in Hillsborough Township, Somerset County, in the state of New Jersey. It's not a separate town but a special area recognized by the government. You can find it close to the South Branch Raritan River. A special part of Neshanic, called the Neshanic Historic District, was added to a list of important places in 1979.

History of Neshanic

The name "Neshanic" comes from the Lenape Native Americans. A group of them, called the Raritan tribe, used to live along the river here.

Around 1750, Dutch farmers started to settle in the area. Their community life grew around a church, a school, and a grist mill. A grist mill is a place where grain is ground into flour.

There was also a tavern owned by John Bennett. Historians say this tavern was very important in helping the village grow. The first mill was built by Bergen Huff around 1770.

Neshanic also had a tannery. A tannery is a place where animal skins are turned into leather. This tannery supplied leather to people in the village and to the nearby town of New Brunswick.

At one time, the area around the Shirk farm was famous for growing peaches. It was the biggest peach-producing region in New Jersey!
