History of Neshanic Station

The name "Neshanic" comes from an Algonquian word meaning "double stream." This name likely refers to the rivers or streams in the area.

Railroad Connections

Neshanic Station was once an important stop along the South Branch Railroad. This railroad later became part of the Central Railroad of New Jersey. Even today, the Lehigh Line of Norfolk Southern Railway (which used to be the Lehigh Valley Railroad) still has tracks running north of the community.

Local Geography

The South Branch Raritan River flows just east of Neshanic Station. An interesting bridge, called the Elm Street Bridge, crosses this river. It's a special type of bridge known as a lenticular truss bridge. This bridge connects Elm Street (Somerset County Route 667) to River Road (CR 567).
