Nature and Waterways

The Special Red Moss Bog

The Red Moss is a very important natural area. It is known as a national Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in the United Kingdom. This means it is a protected place because it has many different kinds of plants and animals. It is also important because its natural habitat has not been disturbed.

A small river, called the Crynoch Burn, flows out of the Red Moss. This burn is a natural watercourse that helps drain the bog.

Local Burns

To the west of Netherley, there is another small river called Cairnie Burn. This burn is a tributary, which means it flows into the Crynoch Burn. These burns are important parts of the local environment.

Learning in Netherley

Netherley School's History

Netherley has its own primary school, which has a long history. The original school building was made of stone and was built a very long time ago, at least in the 1800s.

In 2007, a brand new school building was opened. This new facility brought together students from both Netherley and Maryculter primary schools. The new school is located right next to the Lairhillock Inn. The old school building is no longer used for teaching. It has been changed into a home instead.

Netherley's Past

Ancient Routes and Roman Legions

Long ago, Roman soldiers marched near Netherley. They used routes like the one from Raedykes to Normandykes. They chose higher ground to avoid the wet, boggy areas like Red Moss and other low-lying swamps near the Burn of Muchalls.

The Elsick Mounth is one of the very old paths that crosses the Grampian Mountains. This ancient route lies to the west of Netherley.

Innovators in Agriculture

In the late 1700s, a wealthy trader named Alexander Silver built a large mansion house in Netherley. He had made his money trading in the East Indies.

Alexander Silver and his son, George Silver, were well-known for their new ideas in farming during their time. They helped improve how crops were grown and land was used.
