What is Netherton Like?
Netherton is located in the southern part of the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton. It is close to other areas like Thornton, Litherland, Aintree, Walton and Sefton Village.
The area has two main parts. One is the semi-rural Netherton Village. This part has privately owned houses built around an old village green. The other part is a large housing estate. This estate was built by the former Bootle Borough Council. It is located on the other side of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.
Many of the houses on the estate are still lived in by the same people who moved there when they were new. These people were often hard-working. Many came to Netherton for jobs at the English Electric factory. This factory made heavy machinery.
How Netherton Grew
The main housing estate, around Marian Square, was built in the mid-1950s. It helped solve housing shortages in Bootle. Bootle was heavily bombed during the Second World War. About 16,000 houses were damaged. Over a thousand were completely destroyed.
The Sefton Estate was built later, in the mid-1960s. It was built by Lancashire County Council. This estate was the first in the area to have central heating.
Marian Square is a central point. It has shops and a post office. There were once plans for a very tall building and a swimming pool in the area. However, these plans were never built.
The unused land in the Rimrose Valley was turned into a park. New houses are now being built on old allotments in Litherland.
Businesses and Sports in Netherton
Many businesses have been in Netherton. These include English Electric and Metal Box. Today, there is a large trading estate. It has an Odeon cinema, a Matalan store, and a Dunelm mill furniture store. There is also a pub called the Bakers Dozen. You can also find a McDonald's and a Subway restaurant with drive-thrus.
Netherton was once home to the Everton F.C. youth academy. This is where young football players trained. It has now moved to Finch Farm. The old site is now a Goals football centre.
A new road, the A5758, opened on August 19, 2015. It links Thornton to Switch Island.
Netherton's Past
Before the late 1700s, the Earl of Sefton had a large estate in Netherton. The main house was where Our Lady of Walsingham school is now. An old map from the 1600s and 1700s shows a deer park. This park covered a large area.
Netherton was once a small area called a township. It was linked to the parish of Sefton. In 1866, it became its own civil parish. Over time, parts of Netherton became part of Bootle.
Since April 1, 1974, Netherton has been part of the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton.
For national elections, Netherton is in the Bootle area. This area is represented by Peter Dowd, a Member of Parliament from the Labour Party.
For local elections to Sefton Council, Netherton is split into two areas. These are Netherton and Orrell and St. Oswald. All six councillors who represent Netherton are from the Labour Party.
Buildings in Netherton
The oldest houses in Netherton are in Netherton Village. They are clustered around the village green. The old Catholic church of St. Benet was built in 1793. It looks like a regular house from the road. A newer church was built across the road in the 1970s.
Today, Netherton has many modern houses. The newest estate was finished in 2000. It was built by George Wimpey. These houses are considered very nice.
