New Hythe is a small village located in the middle of Kent, England. It sits right next to the River Medway, about 5 miles (8 km) northwest of Maidstone, which is the main town of Kent. The name "Hythe" comes from an old English word meaning a safe place for boats to land. New Hythe is part of two local areas called East Malling and Larkfield and Ditton.
A Look at New Hythe's Past
New Hythe was once very important for the local economy. This was mainly because of the Aylesford Paper Mill. This huge paper mill was one of the biggest in Europe. It provided many jobs for people in the area. However, the mill closed down in 2015.
The village was also home to a TV studio. From 1993 to 2004, Meridian TV had its newsroom here. They created news for the southeast of England. Later, the TV station moved its operations to Maidstone Studios.
Over the years, New Hythe has grown a lot. It used to be quite separate from nearby villages. But with new buildings and developments, it has become part of a larger area. This area includes Larkfield and the Leybourne Lakes region.
Getting Around New Hythe
New Hythe has its own train station. This station is on the Medway Valley line, making it easy to travel by train. The village is also very close to Junction 4 of the M20 motorway. This makes it simple to reach by car as well.
