The New Right (Hebrew: הימין החדש, HaYamin HeHadash) is a right-wing political party in Israel. It was started in December 2018 by Ayelet Shaked and Naftali Bennett. The New Right aims to be a party for both religious and non-religious Jewish people.

The party did not win any seats in the April 2019 election. However, it won three seats in the September 2019 election. It kept these seats in the March 2020 election and then won seven seats in the 2021 election. The New Right is currently part of the Yamina alliance.

The Story of the New Right

The New Right party was formed in December 2018. Naftali Bennett, Ayelet Shaked, and Shuli Mualem left their old party, The Jewish Home, to create it. They wanted a new party that would welcome both religious and non-religious Jewish people. Their old party, The Jewish Home, was mainly for religious people.

In January 2019, Caroline Glick, a writer, joined the party. Later that month, Shirly Pinto, who works for deaf rights, also joined. Ayelet Shaked said Pinto would help people with disabilities.

For the September 2019 election, the New Right joined an alliance called Yamina. This alliance also included The Jewish Home and Tkuma. After the election, the Yamina alliance split into two groups, with the New Right being one of them.

Before the 2020 election, the New Right joined the Yamina alliance again with The Jewish Home and Tkuma. In May 2020, the New Right and Tkuma decided to leave the government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. They became part of the opposition, which means they worked against the government's plans.

In May 2021, it was reported that Naftali Bennett and Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid were working to form a new government. By May 30, most members of the Yamina party agreed to join a government with Lapid.

What the New Right Believes

The New Right party has several main ideas:

  • They want religious and non-religious Jewish people to work together.
  • They believe the Land of Israel belongs to the Jewish people.
  • They are against creating a Palestinian state.
  • They believe in a free economy, where businesses have a lot of freedom.
  • They believe people should have personal freedom and be responsible for their choices.
  • They believe Israel is the special home country for the Jewish people.
  • They believe all minorities in Israel should have full civil rights.
  • They want to support Jewish traditions and keep Israel's Jewish character, but without forcing anyone.
  • They don't like it when judges make decisions that they think should be made by elected lawmakers.
  • They want to help the high-tech industry grow by having fewer rules.
  • They believe the government should help people who cannot take care of themselves. However, those who can work should work.

Ayelet Shaked said the party would work to improve relations between religious and non-religious people. They want to do this based on understanding and a modern version of the Gavison-Medan Covenant.
