New Rochelle Historic Sites facts for kids
New Rochelle Historic Sites are special places in the city of New Rochelle, New York. These sites are chosen by the Historical and Landmarks Review Board (HLRB). They include buildings, monuments, and other important spots.
New Rochelle was first settled by French refugees in the 1680s. It started as a small farming town. Over time, it grew into a popular resort and then a busy suburban area. In 1899, it officially became a city. Today, New Rochelle is the seventh largest city in New York State.
What Makes a Place Historic?
The HLRB picks historic sites based on several important reasons. These reasons include:
- Its history and past events.
- Its unique design or architecture.
- Its artistic or cultural importance.
- Its social value to the community.
In 1998, experts studied New Rochelle's history. They looked for the most important historic buildings and areas. They found one historic district and 78 individual properties. These places were chosen because they tell a big part of New Rochelle's story. Many of them are even important enough to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
