The New Savannah Bluff Lock and Dam is a special structure on the Savannah River in Georgia. It's a dam that used to have a working lock, which is like a water elevator for boats. This dam is located near where an old town called New Savannah used to be, south of Augusta, Georgia.

Why Was the Dam Built?

The Army Corps of Engineers built this dam. Its main goal was to help boats and ships travel easily on the Savannah River. This made it easier for businesses to move goods to and from the city of Augusta, which is about 13 miles (21 km) upstream. The dam was not built to make electricity or to stop floods.

A Look Back: History of the Dam

The New Savannah Bluff Lock and Dam was finished in 1937. It was built to help commercial boats travel on the upper part of the Savannah River. The last time a commercial ship used the lock was in 1979. After that, the lock and the river channel above it were not used much.

In 1999, the Army Corps of Engineers thought about taking the dam down. But many local people were upset because it would affect how they used the water. So, in 2000, the United States Congress decided the dam should be fixed. They also said it should be given to a local government to take care of. However, the money for this work never came through.

Helping Fish Pass Through

Later, a law called the WIIN Act changed things. It said the Army Corps should build a way for fish to swim past the dam. This was important because deepening the Savannah River for huge ships caused problems. It let saltwater damage places where endangered shortnose sturgeon fish laid their eggs.

Allowing these fish to swim upstream past the New Savannah Bluff dam would help them reach their old spawning grounds. This would help make up for the damage. As of 2018, the Army Corps was looking at different ways to help the fish. They planned to choose a design in 2019 and start building in 2021.

What the Dam is Used For Today

The dam is still very important for many reasons. It helps provide water for one town, five industries, and a sod farm. It also creates a great place for fun activities like boating and fishing. Special events like rowing and powerboat races happen here too. The dam also helps the local economy and tourism.

It is also operated to help some types of migratory fish, like the anadromous fish, pass through. The water held back by the dam stretches all the way through downtown Augusta. It goes up to the I-20 bridges.

How the Dam is Built

The New Savannah Bluff Lock and Dam project includes a lock chamber, the dam itself, an operation building, and a 50-acre (20-hectare) park. The dam is 360 feet (110 m) long. It has five large gates that can be lifted up and down. Each gate is 60 feet (18 m) long.

The two gates at each end of the dam are 12 feet (3.7 m) high. They are designed to let water flow over them. The three gates in the middle are 15 feet (4.6 m) high and do not let water flow over them. All these gates are controlled from the J. Strom Thurmond project far away.

The Lock Chamber

The lock is on the Georgia side of the river, next to the dam. The part of the lock where boats can enter is 56 feet (17 m) wide and 360 feet (110 m) long. It can lift boats about 15 feet (4.6 m) up or down. This whole concrete structure was built on timber piles and finished in 1937.
