The Newark Air Museum is an exciting air museum located in England. You can find it near Newark-on-Trent in Nottinghamshire. This museum is built on what used to be a Royal Air Force (RAF) base called RAF Winthorpe. It's a fantastic place to see many different types of aircraft up close!

History of the Museum

The land where the museum stands was once an active airfield. It was known as RAF Winthorpe during the Second World War. The airfield first opened its doors in September 1940.

From 1942 to 1944, RAF Winthorpe was a busy training center. It was home to No. 1661 Heavy Conversion Unit, which trained crews to fly the famous Avro Lancaster bomber planes. This unit had about thirty aircraft. Later, in 1945, the airfield became part of the RAF's Transport Command.

After the war, in 1964, a large part of the old airfield was bought. The Newark and Nottinghamshire Agricultural Society purchased about 200 acres (0.81 km2) of land. They still use this land to hold the Newark and Nottinghamshire County Show.

The idea for the air museum started in 1968. A special company called Newark (Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire) Air Museum was created. The museum officially welcomed its first visitors on 14 April 1973.

The museum has grown a lot over the years. In 1990, it opened its very first exhibition hall. This allowed more planes and displays to be shown indoors. Later, the museum bought even more land, about 12.38 acres (0.05 km2), which they called the Southfield Site. A second large display hall was opened on this new land in 2004.
