Newberry (/ˈnuːbɛəri/ noo-BAIR-ee) is a small village in Michigan, USA. It is the main town in Luce County. About 1,446 people lived there in 2020.
Newberry is surrounded by large forests. It is known as "the Moose Capital of Michigan" because of the many moose in the area! The village is also a great starting point for visiting the beautiful Tahquamenon Falls.

History of Newberry
Newberry was started in 1882. It became the main town for Luce County in 1887. The village is named after John Stoughton Newberry, who was an important person from Michigan.
Long ago, people tried to save an old, fancy courthouse in Newberry. They couldn't save the courthouse, but they did save the old sheriff's house. This house is now the Luce County Historical Museum.
Wildfires Near Newberry
The area around Newberry has had two big wildfires.
- The Sleeper Lakes Fire happened in August 2007. It burned about 29 square miles (75 square kilometers) north of Newberry.
- In May 2012, the Duck Lake Fire burned about 34 square miles (88 square kilometers) of forests. This fire was near Tahquamenon Falls State Park.
Both fires were started by lightning. The village of Newberry itself was safe, but firefighters worked from Newberry to stop the fires.
Geography and Climate
Newberry covers an area of about 0.98 square miles (2.54 square kilometers). All of this area is land.

Newberry has a humid continental climate. This means it has big changes in temperature between seasons. Summers are warm or hot, and winters are cold. Rain and snow fall throughout the year.
In this type of climate, the coldest month's average temperature is below 26.6°F (-3°C). Also, at least four months have an average temperature of 50°F (10°C) or higher.

Newberry is home to Tahquamenon Area Schools. This school district serves all of Luce County. It also covers parts of other nearby counties.
This school district is very large. It covers about 1,524 square miles (3,947 square kilometers). This makes it the biggest public school district in Michigan by area. It is also the largest school district east of the Mississippi River in the United States. In the 2019–2020 school year, 573 students attended schools in the district.

Major Roads
M-28 runs east to west. It passes about 3 miles (5 kilometers) south of Newberry.
M-123 goes north to south. It runs right through the center of Newberry.

- Indian Trails provides daily bus service. You can travel between St. Ignace and Ironwood by bus.
- The Canadian National Railway offers freight train service. There is a small train depot in Newberry.
