Newmarket is surrounded by the beautiful countryside of Leodsoch. Not far from the village, you can find a peat site. Peat is a type of soil made from decayed plants. It is often used as fuel.
Ancient History Near Newmarket
To the west of Newmarket, there are remains of an ancient stone circle. These old stones are found in a "croft," which is a small farm in Scotland. Stone circles are very old monuments, often built thousands of years ago.

The peat site is a special area where peat is found. It is located right on the edge of the village of Laxdale, which is next to Newmarket. People in the Outer Hebrides have traditionally cut peat for fuel for their homes.
