History of Newport
Newport was first created on October 26, 1781. It was officially named Duncansboro on October 30, 1802. This name honored George Duncan and Nathan Fisk, along with 63 other people.
The first leaders of the town were Amos Sawyer, Enos Bartlett, and James C. Adams. Amos Sawyer was also the first person to keep the town's records. These people were among the first to settle in Duncansboro. On October 30, 1816, the name of the town was changed from Duncansboro to Newport.
Early Settlements and Growth
The first area to be cleared for settlement was where Newport Center is today. H. & A. Adams and D. & S. Meacham started this clearing. They built a dam and a sawmill on Mud Creek. Amos Sawyer, who was a carpenter, built his home nearby.
Two other small communities also grew in the town. These were South Newport and Pickeral Point. Pickeral Point was later renamed Lake Bridge. It got its name because it was located at the beginning of Lake Memphremagog.
By the late 1800s, two major train lines, the Boston and Maine and Central Vermont railroads, passed through Lake Bridge. This brought many new people to the small village, and its population grew quickly. In 1868, the Lake Bridge settlement became its own official "Village of Newport." The main town village, Newport Center, also became an official village in 1908.
Changes in Town Structure
In 1917, the Village of Newport decided to separate from the Town of Newport. It then joined with the Village of West Derby, which was in the town of Derby. Together, they formed the City of Newport.
Later, in 1931, the Village of Newport Center joined back with the Town of Newport. This meant that the town of Newport took over all the duties that the Village of Newport Center used to handle.
Geography of Newport
Newport covers a total area of about 43.5 square miles (112.6 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 41.7 square miles (108.0 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 1.8 square miles (4.6 square kilometers), is water.
The community of Newport Center is located near the middle of the town. There is also a smaller community called South Newport, which is in the southern part of the town.
