Ni Kuang (born Ni Cong, 30 May 1935 – 3 July 2022) was a very famous writer and screenwriter from Hong Kong. He wrote over 300 Chinese novels, including exciting wuxia (martial arts fantasy) and science fiction stories. He also wrote more than 400 movie scripts!

Life Story

Early Years and Journey to Hong Kong

Ni Kuang was born on 30 May 1935, in Shanghai, China. He came from a family of smart people and was the fourth of seven children. His younger sister, Yi Shu, also became a well-known novelist.

In 1950, his parents and three younger siblings moved to Hong Kong. Ni Kuang and his older siblings stayed in mainland China. When he was 16, he joined the People's Liberation Army. Later, he worked as a security officer.

In 1955, he volunteered to work in Inner Mongolia. However, he faced difficulties there and decided to leave. He wanted to find a place where he could have more freedom. In May 1956, he left Inner Mongolia and traveled to Anshan and then Shanghai. From Shanghai, he found a way to travel to Hong Kong. He arrived in Kowloon, Hong Kong, on 5 July 1957. After that, he never went back to mainland China.

Writing Adventures

Ni Kuang's science fiction novels are often like detective stories. They feature extraterrestrial life (aliens!) that help explain strange or impossible events. His most famous books are the Wisely Series and Dr Yuen series. These stories have been made into many movies and TV shows.

Ni Kuang also wrote scripts for movies. He worked with director Chang Cheh for the Shaw Brothers Studio. Some of the films he wrote include One-Armed Swordsman and Crippled Avengers. He also wrote the script for the 1972 film Fist of Fury. In this movie, he created the hero Chen Zhen, who was played by the legendary Bruce Lee. Chen Zhen became a very popular character in Chinese culture. Other famous actors like Jet Li and Donnie Yen have played Chen Zhen in later movies. Ni Kuang even wrote the script for China's first superhero film, Inframan.

Ni Kuang was good friends with another famous wuxia writer, Louis Cha. Ni Kuang even helped write a part of Cha's novel Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils when Cha was on vacation. In that part, Ni Kuang made a character named A'zi blind. Jin Yong later changed this in his own edits of the novel.

In 1992, Ni Kuang moved to the United States and lived in San Francisco. He kept writing there. But in 2006, he moved back to Hong Kong because his wife preferred living there.

Personal Life

Ni Kuang became a Protestant Christian in 1986. Before that, he followed Buddhism.

He had four brothers and two sisters. His sister, Isabel Nee, is also a well-known writer. Ni Kuang was married to Li Guozhen. They had a son and a daughter. Their son, Joe Nieh [yue], works in the Hong Kong entertainment world. He is married to the actress Vivian Chow. Ni Kuang passed away in Hong Kong on 3 July 2022, at the age of 87.

Views on Freedom

Ni Kuang was known for believing strongly in individual freedom. He often spoke about how important it was for people to be free and to respect each other's freedom. He believed that individual freedom was the most important value in the world.
