About the Land
The northern part of Nicholson touches the Gulf of Carpentaria, which is a large bay. The Nicholson River flows into this area from the southwest. It eventually empties its water into the Gulf. A major road, National Highway 1, also runs through parts of Nicholson.

Hells Gate Roadhouse
Hells Gate Roadhouse is a popular stop for travelers. It is on the Savannah Way, which is a long road that crosses northern Australia. This roadhouse was started in 1986. It is about 80 kilometers from Doomadgee and 50 kilometers from the Northern Territory border. The name "Hells Gate" comes from a nearby pass in the rocky hills. There is also a small airport, called an airstrip, at Hells Gate. Its runway is 1,500 meters long.
Historical Places
Nicholson has some special places that are protected because they are important to history. These are called 'heritage-listed' sites. One example is the Old Westmoreland Homestead.
