Many people also know him as the brother of actor Luca Zingaretti. Luca is famous for playing the main character in the popular TV series Inspector Montalbano.

Early Life and Family
Nicola Zingaretti was born in Rome in 1965. His family has a significant history. During World War II, his Jewish mother and grandmother had to escape from the Nazis. His great-grandmother was sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp, where she died.
Zingaretti has an older brother, Luca, who is a famous actor, and a sister named Angela.
As a teenager, Zingaretti became involved in social causes. He joined peace movements and helped start an anti-racism group called "Black and not only" (Nero e non-solo). The group worked to support immigrants and create a society where people from all backgrounds could live together.
After high school, he studied to be a dental technician. He later attended the Sapienza University of Rome. During this time, he met his wife, Cristina, and they now have two daughters.
Political Career
Youth Leader
Zingaretti began his political journey with the Italian Communist Party (PCI). In 1991, he became the National Secretary of the Left Youth (Sinistra Giovanile), a political group for young people. He was also elected to the Rome City Council.
He was a strong supporter of protecting the environment. He also organized events against the Mafia, including a youth camp in memory of two judges, Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, who were killed by the Mafia.
From 1995 to 1997, Zingaretti was President of the International Union of Socialist Youth. He worked to build relationships with youth groups in other countries, especially in Bosnia and Herzegovina after the war there. He even spoke at the UN General Assembly about the importance of young people in the world.
He also worked to promote peace between Israel and Palestine. He organized events to encourage dialogue between young members of the Israeli Labor Party and Fatah.
Member of the European Parliament

In 2004, Zingaretti was elected as a Member of the European Parliament. The European Parliament helps make laws for the countries in the European Union. He was part of committees that worked on international trade and development.
He worked on a law to create the same punishments across Europe for people who make and sell fake, dangerous goods. This work earned him a nomination for an MEP Award, which is a special honor for members of the parliament.
In 2007, he was elected Regional Secretary of the new Democratic Party for Lazio. He left the European Parliament in 2008 to take on a new role in Rome.
President of the Province of Rome
On 28 April 2008, Zingaretti was elected President of the Province of Rome. As president, he started several projects to help the people of Rome.
One project was "ProvinciaWiFi," which installed free WiFi in public places like squares and libraries. Another was Porta Futuro ("Future Door"), a center that helped people find jobs and get training. His administration also supported health and wellness initiatives in schools.
In 2012, he decided to run for President of the Lazio region instead of for Mayor of Rome. He resigned as President of the Province to focus on the regional election.
President of Lazio

In February 2013, Zingaretti won the election and became the President of Lazio, the region that includes Rome. His government passed many new laws.
These laws supported culture and the arts, created a registry to track cancer cases, and helped people who were struggling with debt. His government also passed laws to protect historic houses and natural parks.
On 4 March 2018, Zingaretti was re-elected as president. This was a big achievement because his political party did not do well in the national election held on the same day. He became the first President of Lazio to be re-elected for a second five-year term.
Secretary of the Democratic Party
After his re-election in Lazio, Zingaretti decided to run for leader, or Secretary, of the national Democratic Party. His campaign focused on social justice and reducing the gap between rich and poor people.
On 3 March 2019, he won the leadership election with 66% of the vote. In his victory speech, he dedicated his win to Greta Thunberg, the young activist fighting climate change.
In August 2019, he helped form a new government coalition between his party and the Five Star Movement. This new government focused on supporting Europe, protecting the environment, and creating a new immigration policy. Giuseppe Conte remained the Prime Minister.
Zingaretti resigned as party secretary on 4 March 2021, after disagreements within the party.
Political Views
Zingaretti is known for his progressive and social democratic ideas. He believes in a strong and united Europe but has also been critical of some economic policies.
He supports equal rights for all people, including same-sex couples. He also supports advance healthcare directives, which allow people to make decisions about their future medical care.
Throughout his career, he has focused on fighting economic inequality and supporting sustainable development. His ideas have sometimes been compared to those of other left-wing leaders like Jeremy Corbyn in the United Kingdom and Bernie Sanders in the United States.
Health
On 7 March 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Zingaretti announced that he had tested positive for the virus. He isolated at home with his family and announced his full recovery on 30 March.
