Nicolae Ionel Ciucă (born 22 September 1967) is a Romanian politician and a retired general. He was the Prime Minister of Romania from November 2021 to June 2023. He is also the leader of the National Liberal Party (PNL).
Before becoming prime minister, Ciucă was a high-ranking officer in the Romanian army. He served in important military missions abroad. Later, he became the Minister of Defence for Romania.

Early Life and School
Nicolae Ciucă was born in a town called Plenița in Dolj County, Romania. This was on 7 February 1967.
He went to a military high school in Craiova and finished in 1985. After that, he studied at the Nicolae Bălcescu Land Forces Academy in Sibiu. He graduated from there in 1988.
His Time in the Military
During his career in the army, Nicolae Ciucă took part in missions in different countries. These included Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Iraq.
From 2001 to 2004, he led the 26th Infantry Battalion. This group was also known as the "Red Scorpions." He led them in missions like Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and Operation Ancient Babylon in Iraq. He became a General on 25 October 2010.
In 2015, he became the Chief of the Romanian General Staff. This is a very important role in the military. He held this position until 2019.
Becoming a Politician
Nicolae Ciucă joined the National Liberal Party (PNL) in October 2020. He then ran to become a senator in the Senate of Romania. He was elected as a senator in the 2020 elections.
On 4 November 2019, he became the Minister of Defence for Romania. He held this job until November 2021.
Important Roles and Decisions
After the prime minister at the time, Ludovic Orban, resigned, Ciucă was named acting prime minister. This was on 7 December 2020. He led the government for a short time until a new government was formed on 23 December 2020.
Later, in October 2021, President Klaus Iohannis asked Ciucă to form a new government. He tried to get support from different political parties. On 25 November 2021, he was confirmed by the parliament and became the Prime Minister of Romania.
In April 2022, Nicolae Ciucă was elected as the new leader of the National Liberal Party (PNL). This meant he was both the prime minister and the head of his party.
On 12 June 2023, he resigned as prime minister. This was part of an agreement with another political party. He was replaced by Marcel Ciolacu. The next day, on 13 June 2023, Ciucă became the President of the Senate of Romania.

Awards and Recognition
Nicolae Ciucă has received several important awards. He was given the Commander rank of the Ordre national du Mérite from France. He also received the Commander rank of the National Order of Merit from Romania.
In 2019, he was awarded the Officer rank of the Order of the Star of Romania. In 2020, he received the Legion of Merit from the U.S. Ambassador.

Nicolae Ciucă is married and has one child.
