Nicolae Dunca (born 1837 – died June 8, 1862) was a brave soldier from Romania. He fought in several wars in Europe before joining the American Civil War in the United States.

Nicolae Dunca: A Soldier's Journey
Nicolae Dunca was born in 1837 in a city called Iași in a region known as Moldavia. Even though he was young, he became a soldier.
Early Adventures in Europe
Dunca gained military experience by fighting in different conflicts across Europe.
- He served in a war in Hungary around 1848.
- Later, he was a lieutenant in Italy, helping in the fight to unite the country. This included a famous event called the Expedition of the Thousand.
Joining the American Civil War
In 1862, Nicolae Dunca traveled all the way to the United States. He decided to join the Union Army, which was fighting in the American Civil War. Because he was already an experienced soldier, he quickly became a captain in the 12th New York Infantry Regiment.
Working with General Fremont
Captain Dunca was chosen to work closely with a famous general named John C. Fremont. Dunca became General Fremont's aide, which meant he helped the general with important tasks and messages. At this time, General Fremont's army was operating in a place called the Shenandoah Valley.
The Battle of Cross Keys
On June 8, 1862, Nicolae Dunca was on guard duty during the Battle of Cross Keys. This was a big battle in Virginia. Sadly, he was shot and killed by an enemy soldier. When soldiers checked his belongings, they found a secret message. It was a dispatch from General Fremont, outlining his plans for the army's movements that day.
Where He Rests
Nicolae Dunca was first buried near where he fell in Cross Keys. Later, his remains were moved to the Staunton National Cemetery in Virginia. He is remembered as a brave Romanian soldier who fought for the Union in the American Civil War.
Other Hungarian Soldiers
Nicolae Dunca was not the only person from a different country to fight in the Union Army. Many soldiers from Hungary and other parts of Europe also joined the fight. They were often called "Hungarians" if they supported the Hungarian cause and spoke the language, even if they weren't born there. These brave individuals came to America and joined the Union side.
