Nilmar's Club Journey
Starting at Internacional
Nilmar began his football journey in the youth teams of Internacional. He joined the main team in 2002 and quickly became a regular player.
Playing in France with Lyon
In 2004, Nilmar moved to France to play for Lyon. He had a great start, scoring two goals in his very first game as a substitute against Rennes.
Success with Corinthians in Brazil
Lyon later loaned Nilmar to Corinthians in Brazil. This move helped Lyon follow rules about how many non-European players they could have.
Nilmar made a big impact at Corinthians. He scored on his first touch in his debut game against São Paulo FC. His amazing skills, speed, and dribbling helped him earn a spot in the Brazilian League all-star team in 2005.
Returning to Internacional
In 2007, Nilmar returned to Internacional. He quickly showed his talent again. In January 2008, he scored a fantastic goal against Internazionale from Italy in the Dubai Cup final, helping his team win.
In December 2008, Nilmar scored the winning goal in the Copa Sudamericana final. This victory gave Internacional the title, making them the first Brazilian club to win the Copa Sudamericana.
Time in Spain with Villarreal
In July 2009, Nilmar moved back to Europe to play for Villarreal in Spain. He formed a strong attacking partnership with Italian player Giuseppe Rossi. Nilmar compared this partnership to his successful time with Carlos Tevez at Corinthians.
He scored important goals for Villarreal, including the winning goal in a Europa League group stage game in 2009. In 2011, he scored two goals in a thrilling 3–2 away win against Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League.
Adventures in the Middle East
In 2012, Nilmar joined Al Rayyan in Qatar. He also had a short loan spell with Lekhwiya for a friendly match.
In 2014, he signed with El Jaish. Later that year, he returned to Internacional for his third time. In 2015, Nilmar moved to Al-Nasr for two seasons. He scored 11 goals in his first season there.
Final Club: Santos
On July 10, 2017, Nilmar signed with Santos in Brazil. After playing only two matches, his contract was paused because he was dealing with personal health challenges. He later ended his time with Santos in December 2017.
Nilmar's International Career
Nilmar made his first appearance for the Brazilian national team on July 13, 2003, in a match against Mexico. Even though Brazil sent their under-23 team to that tournament, these games are counted as full international matches by FIFA.
His first goal for Brazil came on August 18, 2004, in a 6–0 win against Haiti. After some time away from the national team, coach Dunga called Nilmar back in 2008 for World Cup qualifying games.
