Club Career Highlights
Starting at Internacional
Nilmar began his football journey at Internacional. He joined their youth teams in 1999 and moved up to the main team in 2002. He quickly became a regular player for them.
Playing for Lyon in France
In 2004, Nilmar moved to France to play for Lyon. He started very well, scoring two goals in his first game as a substitute. However, he didn't score any more goals in the French league that season.
Time with Corinthians
Lyon later loaned Nilmar to Corinthians in Brazil. This move helped Lyon follow rules about how many non-European players they could have. Nilmar impressed everyone at Corinthians. He scored on his first touch in his debut game. His speed and dribbling skills helped him earn a spot in the Brazilian League's all-star team in 2005.
Returning to Internacional
In 2007, Nilmar returned to Internacional. This was a big move, as many top clubs in Europe and Brazil wanted him. He quickly made an impact, being named Man of the Match in his first game back. In 2008, he scored a great goal in the Dubai Cup final, helping Internacional win. Later that year, he scored the winning goal in the Copa Sudamericana final. This was a historic win, as it was the first time a Brazilian club won this title.
Moving to Villarreal in Spain
In 2009, Nilmar went back to Europe, joining Villarreal in Spain. He formed a strong partnership with fellow striker Giuseppe Rossi. In 2011, he scored two goals in a Europa League match against Bayer Leverkusen, helping his team win. He scored twice again in another Europa League game against Twente.
Playing in the Middle East
In 2012, Nilmar signed a four-year contract with Al Rayyan in Qatar. He also had a short loan spell with Lekhwiya for a friendly match. In 2014, he joined El Jaish. Later that year, he returned to Internacional for his third time.
Final Club Stints
In 2015, Nilmar moved to Al-Nasr in the UAE. He scored 11 goals in his first season there. His last club was Santos in Brazil, which he joined in 2017. After playing only two matches, he suspended his contract due to personal reasons. It was later shared that he was dealing with depression. He ended his time with Santos in December 2017.
International Career
Nilmar first played for the Brazilian national team on July 13, 2003. This was in a 2003 CONCACAF Gold Cup match against Mexico. He played three times in that tournament. Even though Brazil sent their under-23 team, these games are counted as full international matches by FIFA. His first goal for Brazil was against Haiti in August 2004.
After some time away, Nilmar was called back to the national team in 2008. In 2009, he was chosen for Brazil's squad for the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup in South Africa, which Brazil won. On September 9, 2009, he scored three goals in one game (a hat-trick) against Chile. He also scored in friendly matches against England and Oman later that year.
Nilmar was part of the Brazil squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. He came on as a substitute in some games. He scored Brazil's third goal in a friendly match against Iran in October 2010.
