History of Ninnekah

A post office was opened in Ninnekah on July 28, 1892. At that time, the area was known as Indian Territory. The name "Ninnekah" comes from the Choctaw language. The Choctaw word ninek means "night" or "darkness."

When it was first founded, Ninnekah was part of Pickens County, Chickasaw Nation. The Chickasaw Nation was one of the Native American nations in Indian Territory.

Geography of Ninnekah

Ninnekah is located in the western part of Grady County. It is next to Chickasha, which is the main city of the county.

U.S. Route 81 goes right through Ninnekah. This road can take you about 7 miles north to Chickasha. If you go south on US 81, you will reach Duncan in about 32 miles. Another road, U.S. Route 277, starts in Ninnekah and goes west for about 11 miles to Cement. Oklahoma City is about 49 miles northeast of Ninnekah. You can get there by taking US 81 and then Interstate 44.

The United States Census Bureau says that Ninnekah covers about 10.2 square miles (26.4 square kilometers) of land. There is no water area within the town limits.
