Noah Vonleh (say: VON-lay) is an American professional basketball player. He was born on August 24, 1995. He last played for the Shanghai Sharks in China in 2024. Before becoming a pro, he played college basketball for the Indiana Hoosiers.

High School Basketball Journey
Noah Vonleh started his high school basketball career at Haverhill High School in Massachusetts. In 2011, he moved to New Hampton School in New Hampshire. He decided to repeat his sophomore year there.
Playing for New Hampton School
During the 2011–12 season, Vonleh played very well. He scored about 16 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in each game. For his senior year, he changed back to the class of 2013. In that year, he averaged 17 points, 12 rebounds, and 4 assists per game. His great performance earned him a spot in the McDonald's All-American Game. This game features the best high school basketball players in the country.
Choosing a College Team
On November 10, 2012, Noah Vonleh decided to play for Indiana University. He chose Indiana over other top schools like Kansas, North Carolina, and UCLA. He said he picked Indiana because of their good academics and strong basketball program. At the time, Indiana was the number one team in the country.
College Basketball Career
Noah Vonleh played only one season for the Indiana Hoosiers. This was during the 2013–14 season. He quickly became a standout player.
Awards and Achievements
During his time at Indiana, Vonleh received several honors. He was named the Big Ten Conference Men's Basketball Freshman of the Year. This award goes to the best first-year player in the Big Ten Conference. He was also chosen for the Third-team All-Big Ten by coaches and media. This means he was recognized as one of the top players in the conference.
College Statistics
In his 30 games at Indiana, he started 29 of them. He averaged 11.3 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game. He played about 26.5 minutes in each game.
Moving to the NBA
After just one successful year in college, Noah Vonleh decided to enter the NBA draft. He announced his decision on April 3, 2014. This meant he gave up his remaining three years of college eligibility to become a professional player.
Professional Basketball Career
Noah Vonleh began his professional journey in the NBA. He played for several teams before moving to play internationally.
Charlotte Hornets (2014–2015)
On June 26, 2014, the Charlotte Hornets picked Noah Vonleh as the ninth overall player in the 2014 NBA draft. He signed his contract with the Hornets on July 25, 2014. Before the season started, he had surgery for a sports injury. This kept him from playing for six to eight weeks.
He played only four games for the Hornets at the start of the 2014–15 season. He was then sent to the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, a team in the NBA Development League. He was called back to the Hornets three days later. On April 12, 2015, he had his best game of the season. He scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds against the Detroit Pistons. Three days later, he had another game with 12 rebounds.
Portland Trail Blazers (2015–2018)
On June 24, 2015, Vonleh was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers. He was traded along with Gerald Henderson Jr. in exchange for Nicolas Batum. On November 15, 2015, he started his first game for the Trail Blazers. This game was against his old team, the Charlotte Hornets. He scored 9 points and had 6 rebounds in almost 24 minutes. On January 23, 2016, he scored a season-high 11 points against the Los Angeles Lakers.
In February 2017, the Trail Blazers traded for center Jusuf Nurkić. After Nurkić joined the team, Vonleh started to play much better. In the last 26 games of the season, he averaged 6.7 points and 7.2 rebounds. He also had four games where he scored double-digits in both points and rebounds. On April 10, he made his first game-winning shot against the San Antonio Spurs. He had 11 games with double-digit rebounds that season. His career-high was 19 rebounds against the New Orleans Pelicans.
On November 20, 2017, Vonleh had another strong game. He scored 11 points and grabbed 18 rebounds in a win over the Memphis Grizzlies.
Chicago Bulls (2018)
On February 8, 2018, Vonleh was traded to the Chicago Bulls. This trade also involved cash and draft rights to another player.
New York Knicks (2018–2019)
On July 24, 2018, Vonleh signed with the New York Knicks. On January 25, 2019, he had his best game ever. He scored a career-high 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. This was in a game against the Brooklyn Nets.
Minnesota Timberwolves (2019–2020)
On July 8, 2019, Vonleh signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Denver Nuggets (2020)
On February 5, 2020, the Timberwolves traded Vonleh to the Denver Nuggets. This was part of a big trade involving four teams.
Later, on November 27, 2020, Vonleh signed with the Chicago Bulls again. However, he was released by the Bulls on December 14.
Brooklyn Nets (2021)
On February 8, 2021, Vonleh signed with the Brooklyn Nets. He played only four games for the Nets before being released.
Shanghai Sharks (2021–2022)
On September 18, 2021, Vonleh signed with the Shanghai Sharks. This team plays in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA).
Boston Celtics (2022–2023)
On August 2, 2022, Vonleh signed a one-year deal with his hometown team, the Boston Celtics. On October 15, 2022, it was confirmed that Vonleh had earned a spot on the Celtics' roster for the 2022 regular season. On January 5, 2023, Vonleh was traded to the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs then released him later that same day.
Second Time with the Shanghai Sharks (2023–2024)
On August 17, 2023, Vonleh signed with the Shanghai Sharks for a second time. He played for them until 2024.
Personal Life and Family
Noah Vonleh's parents are Samuel Vonleh and Renell Kumeh. He has two siblings. His sister, Aaronette Vonleh, is also a college basketball player. She currently plays at Baylor University. She previously played at the University of Arizona and the University of Colorado Boulder. Noah's great-grandfather, Chief Blahsue Vonleh, was an important leader in Liberia from 1920 to 1947.
