History of Nolanville
Nolanville was a busy town between 1890 and 1900. During this time, a weekly newspaper called the Item started. The town also got its first telephone service. People used barbed wire fences to make the phone lines! There were two lines, one for the south side and one for the north side of Nolan Creek.
Early 20th Century Changes
In 1903, Nolanville School was one of the biggest rural schools in the county, with 90 students. Between 1900 and 1910, the first car appeared in Nolanville. Cars made it easier for people to travel to bigger towns like Belton or Killeen. This meant that some businesses in Nolanville started to decline.
In 1921, a new two-story brick school was built. Later, in 1938, the main part of the current school building was constructed. By the mid-1940s, Nolanville had about 150 to 200 residents. However, after World War II ended, the town's population decreased.
Growth and Modern Times
By the 1950s, only about 50 people lived in Nolanville. But in the 1960s, the town started to grow again. On March 27, 1961, Nolanville officially became an incorporated city. At that time, it had 200 residents and six businesses.
As the nearby Killeen and Fort Cavazos areas expanded, Nolanville grew too. By 1968, its population reached 740 people. The city continued to grow, reaching 1,050 residents by 1974, 1,834 in 1990, and 2,150 in 2000. By the 2010 census, the population had jumped to 4,259.
In 2011, Nolanville became a "home rule" city, which means it has more control over its own local government. The city's motto is "A Great Place to Live." Many young people live in Nolanville. It's also a popular spot for long-distance biking and running events. Some special events include the Annual Fox Trot 5K race and the Train Whistle Jamboree.
School District Changes
The Nolanville Common School District #50 joined the Killeen Independent School District in the spring of 1972. This happened because the Nolanville school board asked for it. At that time, Nolanville's school was growing and needed more space and resources. It was unusual for a school to join a larger district because it was growing, rather than shrinking.
