The economy of Nord-Vest mostly relies on farming. About 46% of the people in the region work in agriculture. However, there are also important factories and businesses. These are found in bigger cities like Cluj-Napoca, Oradea, Baia Mare, Bistriţa, Satu Mare, and Zalau.
There are also places where people dig for minerals, especially in Maramureş county and the Apuseni Mountains. Some of these mining areas have closed down. This has caused some people to lose their jobs. Even so, the number of people without jobs in Nord-Vest is about 4%. This is lower than the average for all of Romania, which is 5.5%.
The government has called some mining areas "disadvantaged zones." This means they offer special help to companies that want to start businesses there. The goal is to create new jobs and bring different types of work to these areas.
The average income per person in Nord-Vest is a bit lower than the Romanian average. However, big cities like Cluj-Napoca and Oradea are very successful and have higher incomes.
Travel and Transport
The Nord-Vest region has a good transportation system. Five major European roads pass through it. These roads connect the region to other parts of Europe.
A new highway, called the A3 freeway, is also being built. It will cross through Cluj, Sălaj, and Bihor counties. The region also has many railway lines. These lines connect most of the important towns by train.
There are four airports in the region:
- Cluj-Napoca
- Oradea
- Satu Mare
- Baia Mare
Currently, airports in Cluj-Napoca, Oradea, and Baia Mare have flights to other countries. Satu Mare airport mostly handles flights within Romania.
