North Padre Island facts for kids
North Padre Island is a long, narrow piece of land called a barrier island located along the coast of Texas. It was formed along with South Padre Island when a channel called the Port Mansfield Channel was dug, splitting the original Padre Island into two parts.
North Padre Island stretches across parts of several counties from north to south: Nueces, Kleberg, Kenedy, and Willacy counties. The northernmost part of the island, up to the Kleberg County line, is actually part of the city of Corpus Christi.
Life on North Padre Island
The northern part of North Padre Island is a special area within the city of Corpus Christi. Locals often call this area simply "The Island." It's known for its nice homes and apartment buildings (condominiums). Many people enjoy living here because it's a great place for fishing.
A water channel called the Packery Channel separates North Padre Island from Mustang Island. This channel connects the Gulf of Mexico to the Laguna Madre, which is a very shallow body of water.
There are many hotels on North Padre Island, perfect for visitors. You can find them along the beach or near where two main roads, Texas Highway 361 and Texas Park Road 22, meet.
Boating is another popular activity here. Many homes in the neighborhoods are built along canals that lead directly to the Gulf of Mexico, making it easy for residents to go out on the water.
