About North Tacoma
The North End of Tacoma has both unofficial and official borders. Unofficially, people generally agree that its southern border is 6th Avenue and Division Avenue. To the north, west, and east, it is bordered by Puget Sound. Even though Ruston is a separate town, many people living there feel like they are part of Tacoma's North End.
The city of Tacoma also has official names for its eight neighborhoods. These names are not widely known, but you can see them on special signs on city streets. For the North End, the official border runs along 6th Avenue and 4th Street to the south and southeast. Puget Sound forms the border to the northeast and north. On the north, 46th Street goes to Huson, then back down to 6th Avenue in the south.
The main shopping and dining areas are along Sixth Avenue, in the Proctor District, and in Old Town. These areas have many unique restaurants and shops.
Historically, many people in this community were working-class, like fishermen or workers from the ASARCO plant (which was taken down in 1993). Today, the area still has a friendly, small-town feel. Most residents still work in Tacoma.
The waterfront, especially around Old Tacoma, has been updated and improved in recent years. People in North Tacoma often vote for the Democratic Party in elections.
