In 1646, a person named William Royall bought a farm on a river. This river is still named after him today! A few years before that, John Cousins lived on a piece of land between two streams and owned an island. Both of these places are also named after him. These early settlements were in an area the Wabanaki people called "Wescustogo."
Why "North Yarmouth"?
The name "North Yarmouth" was chosen to tell it apart from Yarmouth, which is in Massachusetts. At that time, Maine was actually part of Massachusetts.
North Yarmouth officially became a town on September 22, 1680. It was much bigger back then! It included areas that are now separate towns like Harpswell, Freeport, Pownal, Cumberland, and Yarmouth. Over time, these other towns became independent.
A Book About the Town's Past
