Allium sacculiferum, also known as northern plain chive or triangular chive, is a type of wild onion. This plant grows naturally in East Asia. You can find it in countries like Japan, Korea, and parts of eastern Russia. It also grows in northeastern China. This chive likes to grow near lakes and rivers. It is usually found at elevations less than 500 meters (about 1,640 feet) above sea level.

What is Allium sacculiferum?

This plant is a member of the Allium family. This family includes many well-known plants. Onions, garlic, and other chives are all part of this group. Allium sacculiferum is a wild plant. It is not usually grown in gardens.

How Does It Look?

Allium sacculiferum grows one or two bulbs. These bulbs are shaped like eggs. They can be up to 20 millimeters (about 0.8 inches) wide. The plant has a tall stem called a scape. This scape can grow up to 70 centimeters (about 27.5 inches) tall. It is round when you cut it across.

The leaves of this plant are flat. They are shorter than the scape. Each leaf can be up to 5 millimeters (about 0.2 inches) wide.

Flowers and Colors

The flowers of Allium sacculiferum grow in a round cluster. This cluster is called an umbel. Many flowers are packed closely together in this umbel. The petals of the flowers are called tepals. They are usually a lilac or reddish-violet color. They often have darker lines in the middle of each tepal.

Where Does It Grow?

This wild chive is found across a wide area in East Asia. In Russia, it grows in places like Amur Oblast and Khabarovsk. It also grows in Primorye. In China, you can find it in Inner Mongolia and Heilongjiang. It also grows in Jilin and Liaoning provinces. Its favorite spots are along the edges of lakes and rivers.
