Charnwood was once an area in the city of Leicester, England. It was a special division called an electoral ward. In 2011, about 13,291 people lived there.
This area included the northern part of Leicester called Northfields. It also had two housing areas known as Tailby and Morton, which were once council estates. These are homes built by the local council to help people find affordable places to live.
For a while, Northfields faced challenges related to community safety. To make the area better and safer for everyone, a special plan called The Northfields Project was started around June 2020. This project helped improve things like security fences, street lighting, and public parks.
Where Was Charnwood Located?
Charnwood was surrounded by other areas of Leicester. To the west, it bordered Belgrave. To the north-west, it was next to Rushey Mead, across the Midland Main Line railway.
To the east, it bordered Humberstone & Hamilton, across Victoria Road East. To the south-east, it met Coleman at The Portway. And to the south, it bordered North Evington at Hastings Road. North of Charnwood was the Troon Industrial Area, across Gipsy Lane.
How Did Northfields Get Its Name?
The name Northfields comes from one of three large open fields that used to be around Leicester a long time ago. In 1764, this field was divided up and used to build homes. This happened at a good time, as more people were moving to cities during the Industrial Revolution. Because of this, Leicester avoided some of the serious overcrowding problems that many other industrial towns faced back then.
What Happened to Charnwood Ward?
The Charnwood ward was represented by local leaders on the Leicester City Council. This council is like a local government that makes decisions for the city. In 2015, the Charnwood ward was officially ended. Most of the area it covered is now part of the Troon ward.
