Norvell Township is a community in Jackson County, Michigan, in the United States. About 2,800 people lived here in 2020. The township is named after John Norvell, who was one of Michigan's first U.S. senators.

Communities in Norvell Township

Norvell Township is home to a few smaller communities:

  • Norvell is a small, unincorporated community within the township. It is located where Norvell Lake flows into the River Raisin. The first white settler, William Hunt, arrived here in 1831. A post office opened in 1838. Later, in 1878, it became a stop on the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway. This community was also named after John Norvell.
  • Vineyard Lake is another unincorporated community. It is also a census-designated place (CDP), which means it's an area identified by the census bureau for statistical purposes. This community is partly in Norvell Township and partly in Columbia Township.

The township is located in the southeast corner of Jackson County. To its east is Washtenaw County, and to its south is Lenawee County. It is about 15 miles (24 kilometers) southeast of Jackson, which is the main city in Jackson County.

A significant part of Watkins Lake State Park and County Preserve, about 717 acres (290 hectares), is located within Norvell Township. This land is managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

In 2020, Norvell Township had a population of 2,800 people.

In 2000, there were 2,922 people living in the township. About 24% of the population was under 18 years old. Around 14% of the people were 65 years or older. The average age in the township was 41 years old.
