Nova Odessa (say: NO-vah Oh-DESS-ah) is a city in Brazil, located in the state of São Paulo. It is part of the Metropolitan Region of Campinas, a large group of cities that are close to each other. The city has about 60,956 people living in an area of 73.79 square kilometers.
Nova Odessa was started on May 24, 1905, by Carlos José de Arruda Botelho, who was in charge of agriculture for São Paulo state. The first people to settle there were from Ukraine and Latvia. The city's name means "New Odesa" because Carlos Botelho visited the city of Odesa, Ukraine and liked its street design. It's important to know that the first settlers were not from Odesa itself.

History of Nova Odessa
In the early 1900s, the land where Nova Odessa now stands was empty and perfect for farming. On May 24, 1905, the Brazilian government created Nova Odessa as a "Colonial Nucleus." These were special farming areas designed to attract many European immigrants to Brazil.
The first people to arrive were immigrants from Ukraine. However, many of them were not farmers by trade, so they soon left the colony to live in bigger Brazilian cities. By the end of 1905, only a few Ukrainian families remained in the area.
To help the colony grow, the Brazilian government sent João Gutmann to Riga, the capital of Latvia. His goal was to find farmers who would want to move to Nova Odessa. In 1906, the first settlers from Latvia arrived. They were good farmers and helped the colony become strong. Later, more people were sent to Latvia to encourage even more families to come.
