What's in a Name? The Story of Nuevo Colón

Nuevo Colón was not always called by its current name. Long ago, before the Spanish arrived, this area was known as Chiriví. This name came from the Chibcha language, spoken by the Muisca people. In their language, Chiriví meant "our."

The town officially received the name Nuevo Colón in 1907.

A Glimpse into Nuevo Colón's Past

Before the Spanish came, Chiriví was part of the lands ruled by the hoa of Hunza. The hoa was a powerful Muisca leader.

In 1537, a Spanish explorer named Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada traveled through Nuevo Colón. He was on his way to find the famous emerald mines of Somondoco. He was also heading towards Tunja, which was then called Hunza.

After the Spanish founded Tunja, Chiriví became part of an encomienda. This was a system where Spanish settlers were given control over indigenous people and their lands. Gonzalo Suárez Rendón was in charge of this area.

The first Christian missionaries visited Nuevo Colón in 1556. The first church was built in 1776. The modern town of Nuevo Colón was officially founded on October 15, 1783. The orange color on the town's coat of arms represents the skin color of the native Muisca people.
