Nur Hossain Kasemi (Bengali: নূর হুসাইন কাসেমী; born January 10, 1945 – died December 13, 2020) was an important religious scholar, teacher, and political leader from Bangladesh. He was known for his deep knowledge of Islam and his leadership in various Islamic organizations.
He served as the secretary general of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh. He was also a vice-president of Al-Haiatul Ulya Lil-Jamiatil Qawmia Bangladesh. Beyond his leadership roles, he was a respected teacher of Hadith (sayings and actions of Prophet Muhammad) and the head of several religious schools. He helped manage about 45 Islamic schools.

Early Life and Family
Nur Hossain Kasemi was born on January 10, 1945. His family lived in a village called Chodda. This village is located in the Comilla District of what is now Bangladesh. He came from a Bengali Muslim family.
In his personal life, Nur Hossain Kasemi had two sons and two daughters. His younger son, Jaber Qassemi, also became an Islamic scholar. He teaches at a religious school called Jamia Mahmoodia Ishaqia.
Education and Learning
Kasemi began his education at a local primary school near his home. After finishing the fourth grade, he moved to Kashipur Kasemul Uloom Madrasa. A madrasa is a type of religious school where students learn about Islam. He studied there until he reached the secondary level.
Later, he attended Al Jamiatul Islamia Darul Ulum madrasa in Barura Upazila. He continued his studies there, reaching a high level of education.
Studying in India
To further his religious studies, Kasemi traveled to India. He wanted to study at the famous Darul Uloom Deoband school. He first attended a madrasa in Saharanpur district before finally joining Darul Ulum Deoband. He spent three years studying at Deoband. There, he earned his master's degree in Hadith. He also studied Arabic literature and Philosophy.

Career and Leadership
Nur Hossain Kasemi started his career as a teacher in India. He taught at Muradia madrasa for one year. In late 1973, he returned to Bangladesh.
Back in his home country, he became a teacher of Hadith and the principal of Nandansar Mohius Sunnah Madrasa. In 1978, he moved to Jamia Arabia Imdadul Uloom Faridabad in Dhaka. He taught there for four years and managed the student hostel.
In 1982, he joined Jamia Shariyyah Malibagh, Dhaka, where he taught for six years.
Founding Schools
Nur Hossain Kasemi was very dedicated to education. In 1988, he founded his own religious school, Jamia Madania Baridhara, Dhaka. Later, in 1998, he founded another school called Jamia Sobhania Mahmood Nagar. He served as the head (rector) and main Hadith teacher (Shaykhul Hadith) at both of these schools from the time they started until his death. He also helped manage around 45 other Islamic schools.
Key Leadership Roles
Kasemi held several important leadership positions in religious organizations:
- On October 3, 2020, he was chosen as the senior vice president of Befaqul Madarisil Arabia Bangladesh. This role also made him the vice president of Al-Haiatul Ulya Lil-Jamiatil Qawmia Bangladesh.
- On November 15, 2020, he was elected as the secretary general of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh. He also led the Dhaka branch of this organization.
Involvement in Politics
Nur Hossain Kasemi became involved in politics in 1975. He joined the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh, which is a political party. By 1990, he became a central leader of the party. On November 7, 2015, he was elected as its secretary general.
From 1990 to 2000, he was also involved in the Khatam an-Nabiyyin movement. During this time, he served as its general secretary.
Passing Away
Nur Hossain Kasemi passed away on December 13, 2020. He died at United Hospital, Dhaka in Bangladesh.
After his death, in 2021, a biography about him was written in Arabic by Yasin Abdur Rauf. A special event called the "Nur Hossain Kasemi Conference" was held on January 9, 2021, in Savar to honor his memory.
