Early Life and Learning
Muhammad Wakkas was born on January 15, 1952. His family lived in a village called Bijayrampur in the Jessore District of East Bengal. He was the youngest child of Muhammad Ismail and Nurjahan Begum.
He started his education at a local primary school. He did so well that his mother sent him to Lauri Ramnagar Kamil Madrasa. This was a famous school in South Bengal. There, he learned the entire Qur'an by heart in just three months. He also scored the highest on his Alim exam in 1967.
He continued his studies at Bahadurpur Shariatia Alia Madrasa. He earned his Kamil degree there in 1971, again getting the highest score. In 1972, he finished his Higher Secondary School Certificate.
His teacher, Tajammul Ali, told him to study at Darul Uloom Deoband in North India. Muhammad Wakkas spent four years there. He topped his exams in 1973, 1975, and 1976. He then earned the title of Mufti, which means he was an expert in Islamic law.
Career and Public Service
Political Journey
Muhammad Wakkas was interested in politics even when he was a student. His teacher often took him to events for the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam party. While studying, he became the vice-president of a student group.
After Bangladesh became independent, he led the Khulna branch of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh. He briefly joined another political group in 1981. But he soon returned to the Jamiat party.
In 1986, he ran in the general election as a candidate for the Jatiya Party. He won a seat in parliament, representing the Jessore-5 area. He kept this seat after the 1988 election. During this time, he also served as the country's Minister of Religious Affairs. He later became a "whip," which means he helped his party members vote together.
After the Jatiya Party lost power, Muhammad Wakkas ran in the 1991 election. He was part of the Islami Oikya Jote alliance but did not win a seat. In the same year, he became the secretary-general of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh. This meant he was a main leader of the party.
He ran again in the 1996 election but did not win. Later, he joined the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. In the 2001 election, he was elected to parliament again. He won by a large number of votes. However, he lost his seat in the 2008 election.
Building Schools
In 1982, Muhammad Wakkas started the Jamia Imdadia Madaninagar Madrasa. This school is in Manirampur. Seven years later, he opened a branch of the madrasa for girls.
In 1995, the school started teaching advanced Hadith studies. The girls' branch began these studies in 2003. In 2009, the school became the largest madrasa in South Bengal. This happened after it opened its Ifta department, which teaches students to give religious rulings. He was also a member of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh.
