Nyoma is an important village in southern Ladakh, India. It serves as the main office for its local area, including its own tehsil (a type of administrative division) and a special community development block. Nyoma is also home to an Indian Air Force Base. It is located right on the Indus River. You can find the Nyoma gompa, which is a Buddhist monastery, on a hill north of the village.

Where is Nyoma?

Nyoma
Nyoma village

Nyoma is located on the northern bank of the Indus River. The river here is wide and not very deep, making it easy to cross. The village is about 33 kilometers (20 miles) west of a big bend in the Indus River near a place called Dungti. Another nearby village is Mood.

Nyoma is 41 kilometers (25 miles) southeast of Chumathang. It is also 87 kilometers (54 miles) south of Chushul. Other close villages include Mahe and Loma. Hanle, the biggest village in southern Ladakh, is about 80 kilometers (50 miles) to the southeast.

The Nyoma area shares a border with the Tibet Autonomous Region of China to the south and east. This eastern border is called the Line of Actual Control. It was set after the 1962 war with China.

Military Facilities

Nyoma Airbase

Nyoma has an Advanced Landing Ground (ALG) for the Indian Air Force. An ALG is a basic airfield where planes can land and take off. This airbase was first built in 1962. It was reopened in 2009 when an An-32 plane landed there. Now, the airbase at Nyoma is fully active.

In 2022, the airbase got permission to grow. It will expand into 508 hectares (about 1,255 acres) of land. This land is part of the Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary. In 2023, the government announced plans to upgrade this airstrip. It will become a full airbase for fighter jets by the end of 2024. This upgrade will cost about 214 crore Indian Rupees (around 27 million US dollars). The airbase is at an elevation of about 4,176 meters (13,700 feet). It will have a longer paved runway of 2.7 kilometers (1.7 miles). This will allow planes to land from both directions. Other nearby airbases are Chushul, Fukche, and Leh.

Field Firing Range

Close to Nyoma, in a village called Mahe, there is the Indian Military's "Mahe Field Firing Range" (MFFR). This range covers 1259.25 hectares (about 3,111 acres) of land. It is also inside the Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary. The firing range is about 40 to 50 kilometers (25 to 31 miles) from the border with China. This is a special firing range in Ladakh where all kinds of weapons can be tested.

Development and Tourism

Roads

The roads in this area are being improved. This is part of projects to develop roads along the India-China border.

Internet and Phone Service

In 2022, permission was given to lay special fiber optic cables. These cables will bring internet and phone service to the Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary and Karakoram Wildlife Sanctuary. This will help connect the people living in these remote areas.

Tourism

Since 2010, foreign tourists can visit Nyoma and its monastery. They need to have a special Inner Line Permit to enter the area.
