Oakland is a community located in Kennebec County, Maine, United States. It's known as a census-designated place (CDP), which means it's a specific area with a lot of people living close together. This community is the main population center within the larger town of Oakland.

In 2010, about 2,602 people lived in the Oakland CDP. The entire town of Oakland had a population of 6,240 people at that time.

Exploring Oakland's Geography

Oakland is located in the northern part of Kennebec County. It sits right next to Messalonskee Stream, which flows out of Messalonskee Lake. The main part of the community is on the north side of the stream. However, homes and buildings are found on both sides.

The community stretches east to the city of Waterville. To the north, it reaches Red Brook, a small stream that flows into Messalonskee Stream. On the west, it extends to roads like Ten Oaks Road and Wiley Point Road. To the south, it goes as far as Webb Road.

Roads and Travel

Several important roads pass through Oakland. Maine State Route 23 runs north and south. Maine State Route 137 goes east and west, crossing Route 23 in the center of the community. Maine State Route 11 also comes into Oakland from the southwest. It then leaves to the east, following Route 137.

Interstate 95, a major highway, is just to the east of Oakland. You can get onto I-95 from Exit 127, which connects to Routes 11 and 137. If you head northeast on I-95, you can reach Bangor in about 58 miles. Going south for about 18 miles will take you to Augusta, which is the capital city of Maine. Downtown Waterville is only about 4 miles east of Oakland, accessible via Routes 11 and 137.

The Oakland CDP covers a total area of about 5.71 square miles (14.8 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 5.41 square miles (14.0 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 0.30 square miles (0.78 square kilometers), is water. Messalonskee Stream flows northeast and is a branch of the larger Kennebec River.
